I'm trying to pick which avatar item I want as a reward from the black Friday diamond event, but I'm not sure which ones count as "event category" items. Does anyone know? I'm really hoping to pick the volcanic island background but I don't know if that's allowed.

In the wardrobe, anything with the orange sun symbol in the upper *lift is an event item. The volcanic Island background is an event category item. :)
