To find avatar items for sale, go to the trade broker:
https://www.sylestia.com/trade/tradebroker/
Click on the dropdown menu labeled "Type", and scroll down to the avatar section. Then click on one of the options and click the blue "Search Broker" button. You can also search for specific items by typing in keywords (example: cloak) beside the textbox labeled "Name".

In addition to what Evil said above, you can also get avatar items by progressing the story line and participating in events. There is currently a Spring Festival going on, so once you get on your feet I highly recommend checking out the festival!
I recommend 3 party pets at at least level 10 in order to take on the Fest Zone. If you have any trouble getting to that point, feel free to shoot me a PM and I can help out with some pet equipment that will make your life easier :)
