I am having trouble changing active pets. I feel I have looked everywhere but know I'm missing something somewhere. Please help this newb

Have you tried going to party (it's in the explore tab above) and clicking the red minus button then scrolling down to the square next to the green plus sign and clicking the square and scroll down to the pet you want?
Your active pet is the first one in the party.
(Sorry if I didn't explain it well)

As said, your 'Active' pet is just whichever pet is in Slot 1 of your team, so in the vast majority of cases it's just going to be whatever pet is your party's Tank (although if the slot 1 pet is KO'd in a fight, then the next conscious pet in the party slot order will take over as the following pet in region 3 areas.
A pet being the Active pet makes no difference to anything other than that they're the one following you on the map in Fest Zones, region 3 areas, and the lost grove
