I used a genetic mutator on my pet, Duke, and he has the lil icon that says it was used on him, but he didn't get anything new, not vis or carried? He already had the wings and antenna. Can those things fail? He's a tamed pet, it should have worked...

Never mind, guess I need a genetic checker thing to see it. Weird.

It sounds like he got a carried trait, not a visible one. And no, traits cant fall off (you can remove them, however, by using a Phil tear of nullification). A genetic test is required to see invisible traits.

if a pet hasn't been genetested you cannot see carried or hidden traits, though they can still pass on to offspring- just like how in the real world you don't know what genes you or your pet carry unless you get the genetics tested.
