so i was planning on just buying catalysts off of people, but now that i know how much they cost i'm not so sure if i can afford that...
so now i need help to learn how to get catalysts myself

To add to what Scath said, catas will also decline in price throughout the festival. Everything is brand new right now, so people are willing to pay higher prices. Once catas start becoming more common and people have already grown some of what they want, it should be easier for you to buy the ones you want.
