My first pet used to be the first pet that showed up, but it isn't anymore and idk how to change it.

Are you referring to your party pets or the pets in your stables?

To swap pet places in the stables, it is a simple matter of "click pet (not the name, just the stable slot, which will highlight it), click other pet"
I assume if pets in your stables swapped places it is because you did this without noticing/realising at some point. I know I've certainly accidentally switched pets on occasion.
