Note regarding the recent revamp on this art thread!
After many months of wanting to revamp this thread but being stubborn about wanting to use my laptop to do it, I finally caved a decided to use my phone. The new thread features loads more art, all organized in a better way than before. I've also included alot of rambling about my art, which hopefully someone enjoys reading. I've spent way too many hours on this thread tying my best to make a fun place for people to view my art, but I'm only human so if you spot any errors like spelling or broken links please ping me to let me know. Thank-you! I plan to come back and add art whenever I make something I think would look nice here, and if I've forgotten I'll add it when I have the chance. Enjoy!

Welcome!

Welcome to Tummygummystar's Art Home!
Here is where you'll find loads of my art along with commentary/explanations! But before diving too deep let me introduce myself!
I am called Tummygummystar (TGS\Tummy) here on Sylestia, but along with my art I usually go by Semparo.
I have been taking art seriously since April 2019, when I decided I wanted to become a skilled artist. A few years ago when my art was showing much improvement I dreamt of making comics. Now I am committed to making that dream come true and want to be a full time comic artist. Specifically I want to plan, write, thumbnail, and draw comics all made from my original ideas.
I am very shy about showing my art, but know I need to start somewhere, and with a great community I thought Sylestia was a comfortable place to start!

Before diving deeper please take a look at the rules below

Please do not:
-post my art anywhere.
-post fan art of my characters or recreations of my art without giving credit.
-use my art for AI training.
-claim my art as your own.

Lastly I encourage you to let me know what you think of my art\art thread
Please ping me if you have
-Questions: about literally anything related to this art forum and my art
-Comments: anything you'd like to say, go ahead
-Constructive criticism: I'd like to know what people think of my art(please remember to be constructive with your criticism)
-Anything else to mention! I'd love to hear about other people's art and love for art or anything art related! I'd appreciate if anyone wants to share their art with me to either make a separate thread on the art forum or pm me i.e. please do not post pics of your art here. Thank you:)

P.S.
The banner for the different sections were made using ibisPaint X's free patterns and fonts.

This is my main outlet for art. Over the years I have completed several sketchbooks and continue to do so. I like painting, inking, sketching with various pencils, and more!
Notes:
-i usually write the date in Japanese.
-usually I make sketches with pencil first before inking, painting, etc.
-i take the pictures with my phone and usually edit them to look brighter before putting them here. I take pride in hardly changing the quality of the art whilst lightening the picture.

Supplies! (digital supplies and softwares are located near the bottom)
Not every thing I use is here, just the most important/relevant things I use. I omitted some markers, erasers, etc..
Pencils

The mechanical pencil at the top of the picture above has been with me for years at this point. It's broken in multiple places and takes alot of force to press the button to pump the lead, but it works fine and draws like new. It takes .5 lead. The two green pencils below are both from Faber-Castell, the top one is 4H lead the bottom is HB. The green varnish on the pencils is water-based, my drawing hand tends to sweat during hot weather so it has been taking the varnish off and making me green xD

These 7 mechanical pencils are filled with the lead in the following 2 pictures. It coloured erasable lead in 7 different colours. I use these pencil extremely frequently, for first sketches when painting, inking, etc., also to add some fun colour to a page. I use the orange one the most, and the green one the least, the green lead seem slightly weaker then the others.

Below is my eraser, it works well and is used by one of my favourite artists.

Liners

These two Staedtler liners are my favourite black liners and the main ones I use. I use the .3 one more than the .5, but the .5 is great when I need to fill larger areas with link. I like the way they preform and want to try more Staedtler liners in the future.

Directly above are my coloured micron liners. Although I have a slight bone to pick with micron liners, I enjoy using their coloured liners. I have pink, blue and brown. I use the brown one most often, I also used it for The Brown Sketches.

Above are some assorted micron liners I hardly use anymore. I'll explain my beef with micron liners. When I got into inking my sketches the liners I heard most about were micron. So I bought myself one, the same kind as the bottom liner in the picture. I used it well and didn't have any problems. Once it naturally died I wanted to buy another one. I found a good deal for a pack of three and bought it. I used the first one until it too died and moved onto the second one without problems. But when the second one died too and I went to use the third one I was disappointed. Since I bought the pack already more than a year had passed, so when I went to use the third one the liner had dried out; it was unusable and a waste of money. This experience did leave me slightly bitter but it did not make me give up on micron. Instead I bought the three liners in the picture above. They were purchased to ink a comic I wanted to draw in my sketchbook. I planned for the brush pen(topmost in the picture) to fill solid black areas, the PN(middle) to use for panel boarders and lastly the 01 was for main inking. Also I bought a 005 for small details. For the first 5ish pages the liners were working fine, but they started to become worn out, especially the brush pen due to being made of felt(I think). I did my best to continue, but the 01 liner continuosly stalled whenever I used it. I think the nib had a hard time dispensing ink over a place that was already inked. After so much strife with micron I decided to put them on the back burner.
Ultimately I don't think micron are too bad, they just don't suit all my needs. Still I use some microns, although I mainly use Staedtler now. I think liners in general just don't work for me when I'm trying to draw comics. I'm interested in buying more of the PN nibs, the one I have got damaged by my ruler, but it was actually quite nice when it was new.
Other pens

Directly above I use these white gel pens to correct minor mistakes and add highlights.

Above, using some spare yarn I crochet this pencil case to carry the following pens. Directly below is what the case looks like open, I sewed some pockets to neatly carry the supplies.

Directly below is where I keep any pen nibs that are in use. The container used to be for matches, but I thought is was very beautiful so I kept it for 1year+ until I found a good use for it.

Directly below is a small bag where I keep all of my pen nibs that are dull or rusted. They are fun to play with on spare paper.

Directly below are my new\unused pen nibs. At the top are my deleter Saji\spoon nibs, bottom left is my Zebra Maru\mapping nibs, and bottom right a my g-pen nibs. I used these nibs to draw this comic. I also use them as regular liners.

Directly below is my tachikawa\nib holder. I just bought the cheapest one on Amazon and it's been working great for me.

These last two pens in the picture below are my brush pens. The top one is my main one. I bought it because it's what one of my favourite artists use, I also use it the same way as him: instead is using the ink it comes with in the barrel I dip it in a separate ink pot. This method has superior control over the ink flow and no worries about when the ink will run out. The bottom pen has no option for ink flow so I used the ink it came with, it is out of ink now and the bristles are slightly frayed. I dip it in my ink to fill extremely large areas.

Inks
I use these inks with my pen nibs and brush pens.

Above is my kuretake Sumi ink, I used it to draw[TEMPLINKREPLACE] this comic[/url]. Over all it has a nice feel. It is not waterproof, but supposedly it works with alcohol markers. Below is my speedball ink, it feels really smooth I like using it to let loose. It is meant to be waterproof but only after dying fully. I'm wondering if it is more waterproof on smooth paper because on my mixed media paper it always smudges.

Paints
I use Winsor & Newton Cotman water colours. I bought a palette with 12 colours, and over time bought 7 tubes. I use the tubes to refill my paint pans and to fill other paint pans I own with new paint.

Other
I also have some Staedtler water-based markers. And occasionally I use random pens, pencils, paper, etc..

Paper:
I've have used a hand full of different paper to sketch, paint etc., but currently I'm using Canson mixed media rough.

I like perfect bound sketchbooks more than spiral bound, so a couple years ago I learned how to bind my own sketchbooks. Below is my current Sketchbook using the aforementioned paper. I started it this February and definitely plan to finish it before the end of the year.

Softwares and Digital Supplies
I used Krita for all of my digital art as of Apr,13,2024 excluding the line sticker I made.(I used Fire Alpaca for the Line sticker)
Krita is a great free art software, I recommend it to beginners who aren't sure where to start. I've heard of multiple professional artists use Krita, they do so because it works very well.
Aside from Krita I have also purchased a licence to Clip Studio paint. I haven't gotten around to making much on it, but plan to make my next one-shot using CSP. I got it on sale, I recommend other people to also wait until the software is on sale or use a coupon.

The supplies I use are a 12inch display tablet and a Dell laptop. I feell slightly timid to disclose the specific spects, but if anyone is interested pm me :)

The Brown Sketches!
All these are inked with my brown micron liner. Although they might not look it, these drawings are all really small, about 7ish cm tall. I love to let loose and draw these cute little things. They aren't drawn with any reference, so the anatomy isn't always correct.

The ones directly above and below are the same character. She is a random OC of mine who I made to incorporate a modern hair style, glasses, and nice clothing into one cute girl. I was intrigued when I saw these drawings next to eachother (they are drawn on different pages) because the design differs slightly. The differences were intentional, I like to see the growth of my idea.

The one directly below is an OC for a comic I'm developing. She lives in the desert and uses the bell on the end of her staff as a weapon. It was fun drawing her dispite the anatomy being especially distorted in her right arm. Sometimes I don't completely think out a pose when I'm drawing. Her design is not finished but I find myself drawing it anyways.

Directly below is another random OC of mine. I made him to incorporate fancy clothes, smooth hair, and boots, he also was originally seen in a dream of mine. In which I called him Daiko, I still call him by this name. Lol a rare sighting of my OC having a name :p I almost always draw him holding a rosary with a big cross.

Directly above and below are two completely random characters. The upper was inspired from like cat girls from the 2000s or something lol. The lower is a pirate, I wanted to draw a manly pirate with nice hair, but he looks rather feminine in my opinion, thus I added the mustache.

Chaotic Sketchbook Pages
These are a few of my chaotic Sketchbook Pages, my priority isn't always to make nice pages, I usually just want to have fun drawing. Some days I finish a whole page or spread in a day, but more frequently I add more drawing day by day.

Above was drawn in the Christmas season in 2023 , hence the festive theme. In the top left corner I drew a Dr Albert Krueger from a game called Therapy With Dr. Albert Krueger. I thought his design had great colours and randomly I decided to draw him. The rest of the page is filled with random festive things.

Directly above is a full spread in my sketchbook completed Feb 26 2024. In the top left corner of the leftmost page I drew two random girls aiming to improve my ability to draw people in different angles. The rest of that page is filled with random feet, noses, hands, etc.. In the middle of the spread, with a blue micron, I drew a mermaid. Literally have no clue why aside from the fact I was obsessed with mermaids when I was young, l wished everyday to turn into one lol. In the left most corner of the right page I drew two men with a black liner the right one was drawn without a sketch, so I am especially fond of it. In the bottom right corner in the same page I drew a random guy with my black liner and my brush pen. I think the drawing didn't turn out very good but again I was trying to improve my inking skills. The unaddressed little sketches are random and not very not worthy(except swaddle=<3)

Above is a more put together spread. I was feeling a bit nostalgic reading my old volume of Homestuck so I drew Equius. I was also thinking of painting him, but decided not to. The drawing in the top left corner on the left page was stylized to match the art style of Calliope, another character from homestuck. Obviously a fictional character can't draw real images, but I don't have any clue who was drawing the Calliope drawings, as far as I know Andrew had alot of different artists helping make Homestuck. I just love Calliope's art style! Overall I love how this page turned out! Equius look so cute!

Ink
Can I just mention how much I like inking! When I'm having a good drawing day and ink, I feel unstoppable. I want to become better at inking in the future and experience more ink, nibs, and pens.

O...M...G.. I cannot not like the drawing directly above. Especially the way I inked the pants. Literally addicted to drawing pants like this xD I had a load of fun drawing this dispite feeling unsure of it while I was progressing. I used my black liners in .3 & .5 I think. Directly below was the same pens.

Directly above, I drew this for the hair, and did not regret it because I had a great time drawing.I do like this drawing dispite having flaws. But aren't flaws apart I art lol Also ignore what I wrote on his shoulder, it's kinda silly. :p

Directly above was inked with a g-pen an a brush pen using XxXXX ink. I specifically drew it to practice my penmanship with the brush pen. The miscellaneous nature around the girl turned out better than I thought. Like why is that rock on the right so good lol

Directly above is another inked drawing with my main liners. I wanted to draw a cool looking guy with glasses and a jersey. Not sure if I did justice on his foreshortened arm or his jacket, but I had fun :) His lips were especially fun, I like how they turned out.

Chocolate For My Big Valentine

This is my comic!:D
Sorry in advanced for the incoming text dump:p
Hmm where to start... I guess with my general process and goal for this comic.
Before this comic I drew a 24(?) page comic in my sketch book, it took me 7ish months and although I was happy to complete it, I wanted to make a better comic in a more timely manner. So I gave myself 2 months to write, script, storyboard, sketch, ink and bind a comic of similar length. So in May 2023 I started. The first week I gave was my deadline for the script and the second was the deadline for the thumbnails, the end of June was my over all deadline. I don't think I met the second deadline but by May 18 I started drawing.
How I Drew It
After my first comic I never want to see micron pens and comics in the same room again, so for this comic(which I often abbreviate as CFMBV) I decided to invest in some dip pens, a brush pen, and, ink. I had hardly anytime to practice using them before I started working on this comic, but I didn't run into any dire complications or mistakes. From the start I also knew I wanted to copy my manuscript and bind the copy into a little volume. I was very nervous because I didn't know how to scan things or format them much, so I decided to use one leaf of paper to draw two pages of my comic in sequence then when I copied them I wouldn't have to worry about asking all about how to copy two leafs of paper with one page each into one leaf with two pages. This introduce a few problems: I couldn't work on both side of a leaf at once because of the dying time of the ink, also if I messed up one one page I wouldn't be able to scrap it and move on easily if there was a whole finished page on the opposite side. I disregard these set backs and after sketching in all the panel boarders for all the pages I got to work with my pens. By the 4th of June up to the 14th page was completed, I was making good progress. I surprised myself and by June 17 all the pages were inked and completed. In total there were 30 pages(15 leaves) including the bonus page, plus the front and back cover. The front and back cover were drawn and painted after June 17th before the end of June.
Binding it
Binding my comic was a huge deal to me. After waiting months after my comic was completed I finally made it to Staples (it's far from where I live) and I got 3 copies of my comic. The original size of paper I used was 11" 7"(I think) but standard printer paper is bigger. When I was at Staples I meant to trim the excess paper on the edges, but I was really nervous and was being rushed so I skipped. (Thank-you to the nice Staples worker who copied my comic<3) I bound 1 copy using the untrimmed paper and decided I really wanted to trim the second copy, but the pages were already glued for binding, so I planned to trim 3 sides and on the 3 and final copy I would trim all 4 sides. After a while I went back to Staples to use their paper cutter and made a huge mistake... I put the copy that was glued in the cutter, but the cutter wasn't very strong and it didn't cut all the way through, instead it ripped the paper a bit. Luckily it was salvageable(when I got home I fixed the ripped edge with a razor and trimmed the other edges with the razor) I only had one copy of my comic left, so ,dispite feeling foolish from the failed cut, I continued cutting. This time I could cut one page at a time because the pages weren't glued. Once home I was able to bind it with I light heart. Like 1mil brain cells later I had 3 uniquely bound comics!
I could continue to ramble about this comic but I'll end it here lol props if you understood that ramble xD
