So I read a very helpful guide on the technicalities of breeding sylvesties, hidden and carried genes, their chances of being passed on, all that good stuff. My question is, if I have, say, a sylvesti with a gene in the Gene 1 slot, and a second sylvesti with no gene in the Gene 1 slot, does this mean if I try to breed these two together, the Gene 1 slot for the baby will be blank? As in, Gene 1 slot being empty is considered Nothing which is dominant over all traits?

Which means no matter what, unless I fill in the Gene 1 slot for the second sylvesti, there will never be a gene in that slot for whatever babies come out?

It would explain why the sylvestis I've bred are having babies with no traits because none of the genes or mutations pass on lol T-T

If the Sylesti has a gene in the G1 spot, and the other Sylesti has nothing, the baby will have a carried trait. I'm not the best with Dominant Traits and how everything relates, but Carried/Hidden traits don't show up unless pets are tested, so maybe that's your problem? I can test for you if you'd like.

if parent 1 has, say, G1 AA and parent 2 (100% certain) is NN, then all offspring will be NA (carried A)
if parent 2 has a carried trait, then there's a 50% chance that the offspring will be G1 Vis A (second gene letter being whatever parent 2 had carried)

Remember that if a pet isn't genetically tested you cannot see the carries or hiddens it may have, though there are obviously cases where you may know for certain a pet doesn't have carries or hiddens
(made via generator will only have the traits you selected to give it, common-rarity pets have 0tp, and thus no traits, an unmutated, untested rare-rarity pet with 1v may have a hidden, but cannot have a carry etc.)

Sylestia uses Mendelian genetics- Punnett Squares

here is a punnett square table we made for one of our guides that covers all the different ways traits can cross (well, outside of NNxN? and NNxNN but I think the other examples give the overview well enough to work those out)

When I was doing some tests for two sylvesti's I wanted to breed, neither 'Test' hatchling, or adult showed any gene or mutation of any kind, which led me to do the research with those guides, hence why I think the 'Nothing' slot the guide was talking about is more dominant. But if it's 'Nothing' and 'Carried' then that makes sense, I haven't done genetic testing on the baby, so maybe I'll do that when I have one. It makes sense of that's the case.

To add to what Frostfal said, for hidden traits, dominance is decided by alphabetical order. So if pet A has BB for gene 1, and pet B had DD in gene 1, pet C/offspring would have BD. This means that pet C could carry either B or D down to their offspring
Hope this helps

Hilariously, it was your guide I was reading lol, and I did see those explanations, I had just wanted to confirm. And yeah, I've not genetically tested either sylvesti or the baby they've made, so I'll test them when I have one.

good to know the guide's getting a read!

If you need pets tested but don't have the ability to get your own exceptional test kit at this stage, many people offer free testing services in the Groups, Guilds, Clubs, and Services subforum
