To brew a pet with visible traits, use a Blood Vial! For regular and fabled catalysts, lesser vials add 1 visible trait, greaters add 2 traits, and exceptionals add 3. You can get vials by using a vial holder from your inventory, or you could buy vials from other players.
It sounds like you're already familiar with Vampire Dust, which adds carried (hidden) traits. And while you can't choose exact traits when brewing, Sticky Goo allows you to specify trait slots, such as G1 or M3.
I hope that answers your question :)

To add to what Ender said, when it comes to brewing Majestics, a Lesser Blood vial only adds 1 carried trait(For a total of two since it'll start as one carried with nothing added), a Greater adds 1 visible trait and an Exceptional makes a Majestic 2 visible. Adding nothing makes it 1 carried trait.
Majestics cap out at two visible traits when being brewed since their traits are restricted to a restricted trait set made for that theme.
Fabled and Regular on the other hand do not come with restricted trait sets and can have any un-restricted traits on them when they hatch. Adding nothing will mean a Fabled or Regular brew has 2 carried traits.
Also in the case of Regular and Fabled, if you achieve both bonuses from keeping the brew well cared for, they'll get an added carried trait, along with however many amount of traits already applied to the brew.
Adding a hidden trait to a brew through the use of Vampire Dust will give a visible trait a hidden trait underneath it. You cannot add hidden traits to Majestics.
In case it needs explaining:
Visible Trait - A trait visible on the pet. This trait will show as blue in the pet's Genetic box.
Carried Trait - A trait that cannot be seen on a pet. If a pet is tested, you can see the trait, which will be green in the pet's genetic box.
Hidden Trait - A hidden trait is a carried trait lower down in the alphabet than the visible trait it is hidden under. When a pet is genetically tested, these traits will show as purple. If a pet is not genetically tested, these traits will be blue like a normal visible trait.
Below is an example of a pet with a normal visible trait, carried, and hidden traits:

I'll break down the genetics she has to explain them:
Gene One:(NB) Cross Fox - Carried Trait - N represents no vis, B represents the Carried Trait.
Gene Two: (KK) Wyvern - Visible Trait with no Hidden. K represents what trait is visible, and since there is no carried, both letters are K.
Gene Three: (NC) Lucky Runes - Carried Trait - N represents no vis, B represents the Carried Trait.
Mutation One: (DG) Spade Tail - Visible with a hidden. D represents Spade tail, while G represents the Hidden trait, which is Lynx Tail.
Mutation Two:(FL) Loppy Ears* - Visible with a hidden. F represents Loppy Ears, L represents the hidden, which is Alchemist's Hat. The red asterisk represents that one trait(Which is the hidden in this case), is a wild restricted trait that can found in the Lost Grove.
Mutation Three: (NN) None

I hope this helps explain a little, and apologies if I went into too much detail!
