Hello everyone, Cymas here and back with a brand new guide. The Sylestia Field Guide is part reference, part tutorial and all about Wild Sylesti. The first part of this guide is more of a quick reference for finding a specific breed of Sylesti. The second part is a small built-in rarity guide. Finally, the last part is a tutorial for catching Sylesti.

A Note:

This guide should not be used as a walkthrough. I am only documenting the levels and difficulty of the various Sylesti breeds, not the numerous other enemies, minibosses and bosses encounterable in each area. They tend to be harder than the Sylesti in the zone, particularly the scripted encounters and especially the Dungeons.

Rarity Guide

All Wild Sylesties have an assigned rarity when you encounter them. What does it mean, exactly? Well, rarity is based on genes and mutations. A common Sylesti, for example, when caught will have no genes or mutations. Rarer Sylesti might have several. This is why when capturing you'll usually be better off hunting only the rarer ones.

Keep in mind that if a Sylesti shows up as say rare but appears to have no genes or mutations, it probably has multiple carried traits that simply aren't visible.

Common - No genes or mutations
Uncommon - 1 carried gene or mutation
Rare - 1 visible gene or mutation
Epic - 1 visible and one carried gene or mutation

*There are currently two rarity systems in place. This rarity system is the new one, active only in Astryl's Vale. It will eventually be the standard for all areas.

Common - No genes or mutations
Uncommon - 1 visible gene or mutation
Rare - 1 visible and 1 carried gene or mutation
Epic - 2 visible genes or mutations

*There are currently two rarity systems in place. This rarity system is the original one, active in Viridian Meadows and Umbra Forest. It will eventually be replaced by the new one.

A Note about Stars

The star rating of a Wild Sylesti in battle has nothing to do with rarity. The stars represent how difficult they are to defeat. 1 Star Sylesties are weak and easily defeated, getting progressively more difficult up to 5 stars, which are (uncatchable) boss pets.

Quest: Capture a Sylesti

Towards the end of the Viridian Meadows storyline you will see a quest on the Quest Board from Jinxie called Capture a Sylesti. It's basically a tutorial on how to capture them and as such the entire quest is scripted. You do not need to buy traps for this quest--Jinxie will provide you with one. It's also the only guaranteed capture in the entire game.

Once you get the quest and the trap, simply explore Trollsblight Caverns until Jinxie prompts you to approach and capture a sleeping Sylesti. In order to do so go into your inventory from the battle screen, select the trap, select the Sylesti you'll be capturing and then choose your Sylesti's battle commands as normal. Once the quest is completed Jinxie will reward you with 3 Lesser Snare Traps and send you on your way.

Capturing Sylesti

Now that you know the mechanics of capturing from Jinxie, let's go over a few things she doesn't cover.

Traps:

There are several types of Snare Traps available. Stronger traps are capable of catching stronger Sylesties, however with one notable exception, all traps can fail.

A Note about Traps:

Although all traps can fail, stronger traps have an increased chance of catching all catchable Sylesties. It will never guarantee a catch but if you really want a specific Wild Sylesti you've come across, it's definitely worth it to try the stronger traps against it.

Lesser Snare Trap
Gold: 1,000
Markets: Esior's Haven, Sanctuary of Saerielle, Ethernia
Description: A tranquilizing Snare Trap capable of capturing Common Sylesties and Uncommon Sylesties. This trap can fail. This item is consumed when used.

Jinxie gives you 3 of these when you complete the Capture a Sylesti quest.

Standard Snare Trap
Gold: 2,500
Markets: Sanctuary of Saerielle, Ethernia
Description: A tranquilizing Snare Trap capable of capturing Common Sylesties, Uncommon Sylesties, and Rare Sylesties. This trap can fail. This item is consumed when used.

Strong Snare Trap
Gold: 7,500
Markets: Ethernia
Description: A tranquilizing Snare Trap capable of capturing Common Sylesties, Uncommon Sylesties, Rare Sylesties and Epic Sylesties. This trap can fail. This item is consumed when used.

Masterful Snare Trap
Diamonds: 500
Markets: Diamond Shop, Trade Broker
Description: A tranquilizing Snare Trap capable of capturing any Wild Sylesti. This trap always works. This item is consumed when used.

Pretty amazing, isn't it? A trap that can catch anything and never fails. It's also the only tradeable trap, which means you can buy it from other users if you can't afford Diamonds. Be warned; they are very expensive, for obvious reasons. If you can afford to, I recommend keeping one on hand. Just in case.

Other Useful Items

In addition to the all-important traps, when hunting Sylesties consider investing in some scanners. These are items you can use in battle that tell you what genes and mutations a particular Sylesti is carrying in addition to its stats. If you're looking for a specific gene/mutation and color combination this can be enormously useful and determine whether a particular Sylesti is worth capturing.

Standard Genetic Scanner
Gold: Variable
Market: Trade Broker
Description: A Genetic Scanner that can be used on Enemies during battle. When used, this item will reveal all statistic and genetic information for the target. This item is consumed when used.

Exceptional Genetic Scanner
Cost: 1,500 Diamonds
Market: Diamond Shop
A Genetic Scanner that can be used on Enemies during battle. When used, this item will reveal all statistic and genetic information for the target. This item has unlimited charges.

Strategy

There isn't really much of a strategy to catching Wild Sylesties. It's a lot like Pokemon, actually. Whittle down their health as far as you dare then throw traps and hope it doesn't run away before you catch it. When hunting lower level Sylesti I would not recommend using pets in battle that can easily kill your target Sylesti with a single normal hit or a lucky critical.

Always keep multiple traps when hunting. Traps fail a lot more often than they succeed. Also buy the best you can comfortably afford. There is no magic number of traps you should have, but try to have at least a few on hand at all times.

If there's more than one Sylesti or other enemies in the opposing party, kill off the ones you don't want/can't catch first so your pets don't get seriously injured or KO'd while you're busy trying to catch the one you want.

Make sure you're using pets that know the move Block when hunting Sylesti, in case the trap fails and the Sylesti doesn't run away. This is so you don't accidentally KO it while throwing your traps. If you don't have Block yet just use your weakest attacks and hope for the best.

Levels

For new players this is something to keep in mind. If you capture a Sylesti that is higher than your player level you won't be able to use it in battle until you are the same level or higher. Your player level is equivalent to your highest leveled pets'.

Why Capture?

So you may have read through this guide and are wondering, why exactly would you want to capture Wild Sylesti? You can buy them cheaply from other users and it's rarely worth selling Tamed Sylesti. Capturing is frustrating and often costs a lot of gold. Well, the answer is twofold.

First, for breeding. They are extremely useful in breeding if they have the traits and colors that you want without having to buy a Mutator or Pet Dye. Tamed Sylesti are also not related to any other Sylesti so you don't have to be concerned about inbreeding.

The second is that some people just don't like bred pets. In every pet game I've ever played there's always a small subset of players who refuse to keep bred pets for a myriad of personal reasons. If you're not one of these people and come across a particularly desirable Sylesti, you could certainly try to capture and sell it to someone who is.

FAQ

I captured a Sylesti but I can't find it in my stables. What gives?

A: The Sylesti probably ran away or was KO'd. After you use a trap immediately check your battle log to see if your trap succeeded or not. That is the only way to know for sure what happened and cannot be accessed afterwards.

These traps never work! What am I doing wrong?

A: Nothing. As mentioned multiple times, traps can and do fail. A lot. You may just be having a run of bad luck. If you can, try using stronger traps.

I accidentally released a Sylesti. Can I find and capture it in the wild?

A: No, it is not possible to encounter a released Sylesti. There will be a feature to restore lost pets in the future for a fee.
