~A~
adolescent (noun; plural adolescents): A Sylesti that has assumed its adult appearance but is not yet old enough to breed. cooldown (noun): The minimum amount of time that has to pass before an event that occurs in Sylestia can occur again. Players sometimes refer to a female pet's recovery period after producing an egg (that is, the time that has to pass before that pet can produce another egg), as the pet's "cooldown." However, the term more properly applies to the amount of time it takes for a defeated boss to reappear, or for a random Festival event to re-occur, and so forth.

In Sylestia, males' covering fees are generally much lower than the breeding fees of females are, because males can breed multiple times a day. Females can only breed once every three or every seven days, depending upon the species.

~D~
Damage Over Time (noun; plural Damages Over Time; abbreviation DoT): Damage that continues to occur to the target after an initial attack is successful, without the need for for second or subsequent attacks. After a pet or enemy begins doing Damage Over Time to a target, the damage cannot be halted except by the defeat of the attacker, and sometimes not even then.
An example is Slash, an attack done by pets who are on the Air Tree. If successful, the Slash attack does Physical damage on the round that it succeeds. However, on each of the next two rounds following this successful attack, there is a chance that the target will take further Physical damage even if the target receives no other attacks from any source. This further damage is Damage Over Time.
Damage Over Time is the bane of capture attempts. Players who wish to focus on capturing Sylesties (for instance, during a Festival) either don't use pets that do Damage Over Time in their Parties or do not allow those pets to attack the Sylesti whom the player wishes to capture. The attacks that do Damage Over Time are Slash (Air Tree) and Force (Shadow Tree).
Damian the Hunter (proper noun): A Named Boss who appears beside a fire in the Sweet Blossom Orchard region.
Damian the Hunter
Spoilers: His attacks do Physical Damage and can hit all the pets in a Party on the same round or do DoT. Defeating him does not count in the "Defeating Woodsman Savages or Tamers" Task, even though he looks exactly like a Woodsman Savage.
Dark Cherry Chocolate Luffox Tusks:
Decorative Aurleon Cookie (noun; plural Decorative Aurleon Cookies): An item that players may hand out to other players, at no cost to themselves, during Fall Festival Trick or Treat.
Decorative Aurleon Cookie
Demonic Steed (proper noun): A Named boss who has appeared in the 2014, 2015, and 2016 Fall Festivals.
Demonic Steed
He is a Qitari stallion. Players cannot capture the Demonic Steed but it is quite easy to create a duplicate of him. Use a Regular Qitari Essence and copy/paste the Image Location of the image just above into the Generator. For greater verisimilitude, use an Enhanced essence and add the Fire Mane trait. The resulting pet will look something like this--
This is extremely close to the Demonic Steed's appearance when he is flaming.
Spoilers: The Demonic Steed does Physical Damage and Stun; that is, he can paralyze a pet in the player's Party. Therefore, when the Demonic Steed appears, the player should focus on defeating him, even if that means ignoring the Headless Horseman for a time. This is probably the single most important technique for ultimately defeating the Headless Horseman--get rid of the Demonic Steed as fast as possible!
Deviant Channeler (noun; plural Deviant Channelers): This boss character is not a Named, but rather a type of boss. He appears in Sweet Blossom Orchard, near a mushroom house, alternatively with the Named who also sometimes appears in that location. Note that he does not drop avatar items. Players cannot acquire his Dragonstaff; it simply is not available as an avatar Held.
Spoilers:
Diamond (proper noun): One of Sylestia's many types of currency. Certain items require Diamonds for purchase. There are two ways to acquire Diamonds: (1) buy them for RW cash from the Diamond Shop and (2) get them from other players.
Diamond Tester (noun): An Exceptional Genetic Test Kit, so called because one can only acquire it by spending Diamonds.
dishwater (adjective): The product of a careless breeding; used to describe an Offspring pet. Dishwater pets have dull colors. Newer players, who do not yet understand how color inheritance works in Sylestia, sometimes find to their dismay that they've bred a pair of beautiful pets to each other but gotten a dishwater Offspring. Using the Breeding Grounds' "Test Breed" button helps to prevent dishwater pets. For example, here are two beautiful Nephinies, Daw and Caspiel:
However, Test Breeding them shows that their colors will not mix well, likely resulting in a dishwater pet. The owner can simply avoid breeding Caspiel and Daw to each other.
Disruptor (Slang): Philter Of Trait Disruption (Themed), q.v.
DoT (noun; abbreviation): Damage Over Time, q.v.
Drunk Noodle (noun; slang; plural Drunk Noodles): A type of Themed Nephini, the Cinnamon Eggnog Nephini. Examples--
dust (verb): To give a pet the Lucky Dust trait via a Lucky Disruptor or Lucky Mutator.
~E~
Easter Egg (proper noun): A type of token that players found during the 2014-2016 Spring Festivals. These tokens are tradeable and can only be spent in the Spring Festival Shop.
Easter Egg (x of 9) (proper noun): Nine items, each with a different appearance and number, that players found during the 2017 Easter mini-Festival. When a player had at least one of each of the nine types in their Inventory and then Used one of them, one Easter Egg of each of the nine types would vanish from the Inventory, and a Themed Luffox Hatchling (of the Agouti Rabbit, Cream Rabbit, or Dutch Rabbit Themes) would appear in the player's Hatchery. These Easter Eggs came from Nurturing in Hatcheries, opening chests and boxes in any Zone, including Dungeons, and defeating enemies in any Zone.
Eggling (Noun: plural Egglings): The Sylestia term for a Sylesti egg (not to be confused with the real-world term "eggling," which means "reptile that is about to hatch, or has just hatched, from an egg"). A Sytlestia Eggling may be any species.
Elryssa the Huntress (Proper Noun): A Named Boss who sometimes appears beside a house in the Sweet Blossom Orchard region.
Elryssa the Huntress
Spoilers: Her attacks do Physical Damage and may cause DoT. Avatar item drops from her include White Raven, Black Raven, and Golden Raven.
Enfeebled (proper noun): A de-buff some enemies can inflict on pets. It decreases the pet's Critical Hit chance by 20% for 4 turns. The icon looks like this:
Enraged (proper noun): A buff available to some enemies. It increases the Physical Damage that an enemy does by 20% for 3 turns. The icon looks like this:

~F~
Fabled (adjective): Being, of, or like a pet species that cannot simply be found and captured while adventuring in Sylestia's ordinary Zones. Players can only acquire Tamed or Exclusive Fabled pets under certain restricted circumstances, though of course Fabled pets can be generated with Essences or bred to produce Offspring at any time. All other things being equal, Fabled pets come into existence with higher stats than non-Fabled pets do. The Fabled species are the Aeridini, Griffi, Lighira, Nephini, Ny'vene, and Ryori. Examples: "My first two Stables are just for Fabled pets"; "Fabled female pets take seven days to recover from producing an egg."

Fire Eyes (proper noun): A Named boss in the Arena; the first opponent a player's Arena team will face in the Arena. Fire Eyes is always a male Morkko. Players cannot capture Fire Eyes or any other Arena opponents.

fish daemon (interjection): A Sylestia curse. Example: "Oh, fish daemon it!"
Fish pet (Noun; plural Fish pets): An Exclusive Sylesti created via the Summer Festival Sylesti Seeking area during any Summer Festival that offered this feature (beginning in 2015 and continuing through 2018). Frosty Glitter (proper noun; plural Frosty Glitters): A one-use item that players can acquire during Winter Festivals, beginning with the 2016-17 Festival. When used on a Snow Sculpture, this item allows the player to guarantee that the eventual pet will have a Hidden trait (provided the pet's egg has been sculpted such that it is going to have a Visible trait; Frosty Glitter can't be applied if the pet is only going to have Carried traits or if the pet is a Majestic Themed). Image below.
Frosty Jewel (proper noun; plural Frosty Jewels): A one-use item that players can acquire during Winter Festivals, beginning with the 2016-17 Festival. When used on a Snow Sculpture, this item allows the player to make one of the eventual pet's traits appear in a chosen trait slot. Image below.

Hatchling (Noun; plural Hatchlings): A Sylesti that has hatched from its egg but has not yet assumed its adult appearance. Hatchlings are generally between three and nine days old, inclusive.
have (verb): In addition to its usual meanings, this verb in Sylestia means "to acquire for free or for 1 gold." Examples: "You don't need to buy that pet; I'll just let you have it"; "Could anyone let me have three Sanctuary Of Saerielle badges?"; "Anyone who doesn't already own one may have this Black Raven"; etc.
This use of have can cause problems for newer players, who may offer to let someone "have" an item or pet when they are intending to offer to sell the item or pet. Be advised, then, that if you offer to let someone "have" something, that person will expect to receive it for free or for 1 gold.
Headless Horseman, The (proper noun): A Named boss that has appeared in the 2014, 2015, and 2016 Fall Festivals. When a player first encounters the Headless Horseman, he looks like this--
The Headless Horseman on his Demonic Steed
Spoilers: The fight against the Headless Horseman has three stages.
During the first, the Horseman and his Steed look as they do above and only the Horseman attacks, doing Magical Damage. The second stage begins after the Horseman is reduced below half his Health.
During the second stage, the Horseman dismounts from his Demonic Steed (q.v.), they battle separately, and the Horseman begins doing Physical attacks that then proceed to do Magical DoT (q.v.).. This is the most difficult stage of the fight, due to the Steed, not the Horseman. The third stage begins after the player's Party defeats both the Steed and the Horseman.
During the third stage, the Horseman fights alone, on foot, continuing to do Physical attacks that then proceed to do Magical DoT.

The location of the Valentine Lace slot varies among species.

Named (noun; plural Named): A character created by the site, who has a specific name. Examples of Named are Jinxie, Sapphire, Tinkerbell, Talon, etc. All bosses are Named, but not all Named are bosses. I hope this doesn't get nerfed." In the example, "this" refers to the proportion of avatar outfit drops that are recolorable. The Sylestia Admins may sometimes nerf the probability that a given event (such as a boss drop or wild Sylesti encounter) will result in a highly desirable item/pet, to prevent the item/pet from becoming devalued.

Perfume Of Themed Attraction (proper noun; plural Perfumes Of Themed Attraction): A liquid, which players can sometimes purchase from the Diamond Shop, that increases a player's odds of encountering a Themed Sylesti during a Festival for as long as the Perfume lasts. The Perfume applies its effect to the player, not to a Pet, when the player uses the Perfume. This consumes the Perfume. A Perfume lasts for a certain number of battles, does not work outside a Festival Zone or in a Maze, and remains on the player if the player leaves the Festival Zone, reactivating when the player returns to the Festival Zone. A Perfume of Themed Attraction looks like this--
Perfumes also sometimes appear as various Festival prizes. Note that if a player is selling a Perfume, it will appear in the Trade Broker under Type Miscellaneous, not under Type Philter.
pet (noun; plural pets): (1) A Sylesti that someone owns. (2) Any Sylesti.
