I didn't have any pets in my party (I forgot to put them back in) and it still let me explore. After encountering a pet and failing to run away, I was stuck in a battle, until I ended my turn and lost the battle, instead of the system not allowing me to battle. (Also, can a loss be taken away from my record because of this? xD)
Also, when I got to one of the treasure chests in the demo zone, it froze and I couldn't move at all, until I reloaded twice.

@Krinadon,
Now it suddenly froze and said "There was an Error! You cannot explore without at least 1 conscious pet." All my pets in my party are conscious.
