I was wondering just what the eggs for sale in the scale shop contain. Would they contain some Sylesti, or do they hold prizes of sorts? >.< I've never quite understood it...

Unless it's a golden eggling, each egg will have a pet inside of one of the non-fabled species. No lighiras or ny'venes. How many scales is required per egg indicates how many traits you might find on the pet. So the more expensive the egg, the better the offspring as far as traits go.

Golden egglings are different. They do not contain pets. Instead there's a chance for either a regular essence, enhanced essence, lesser pet dye, or a lesser mutator. During the holidays there's also a chance for a holiday festival item.
