Prologue...
"Get out of here!" Giira yelled, leaning over his son's lifeless body. His voice was full of anger and hatred.
"Where will I go?!!!" Shildr cried, grief clouding his vision.
"I don't care! Just! Get! Out!" the pack leader growled.
The young heir glanced at his mother. She did not look up.
"Mother! Help me!" Shildr pleaded.
Ashaunta continued to ignore the young alpha.
"MOTHER!!!!" Shildr howled. "Arori aratat kira aranti!" he cried in his native tongue.
"Y-you... are no son of mine... not anymore..." the lavender-coated Lupora said, her voice quivering with sadness. She averted his gaze.
"Ice, Dirt, escort him away from our territory. Shildr, ale tigoru anfre grangrena iforu alzena bura-" Giira said in a monotone voice.
"It was an accident! I swear!" Shildr interrupted.
"If you should ever return, I give the betas full permission to terminate you. Begone!" the pack leader howled.
Shildr walked out of the cave, tail between his legs. Ice and Dirt followed in tow. His fraternal twin, Adraxus sat by the entrance, waiting for him.
"I'm so sorry, brother." Adraxus said. "I know it was not your fault."
"Indeed." the dark alpha agreed, his head hung low.
"I will try to convince father." the golden-coated alpha offered.
"No. I am already banished. You can do nothing." |

CHAPTER 1
Shildr walked across the dry land of Sharaga, the scorching sunlight shining on his pitch-black fur.
Never had he felt so alone... so helpless...
It was around Highest Sun-sky that he finally collapsed out of exhaustion.
"Why? Why must I suffer? It's not my fault!" he howled, tears streaking down his dry and dusty face.
Then everything went black...
"Hey... Hey mister! Are you dead?" a voice asked.
Shildr opened his eyes to see a tiny Zolnixi's face a few inches from his own.
"Krinadon's pants!" he yelped, twisting out from under her.
He sat up, paw over his pounding heart. "Don't scare me like that!" he said, gasping for breath.
"Oh, I'm sorry! M'name's Courtney! What's yours?" she asked.
"I'm Shildr." the Lupora said shortly.
"Nice name! You must be from that local Lupora pack. They all have weird names like yours!" she said.
"Yeah... What're you doing out here?" Shildr asked.
"I'm collecting water!"
"There's no water here." the dark Lupora said blandly.
"You just don't know how to find it, silly!" Courtney said, hopping around the battle-scarred sylesti. |

Courtney closed her eyes and started to hum an ancient song as old as the sand around them.
"What th-?!!!" Shildr exclaimed as the sand started to shift beneath his paws.
Suddenly, a rock popped out of the ground.
"Found one!" Courtney said happily, picking up a twig in her jaws.
"A rock? Really?" Shildr asked, personally not impressed.
"Woch. I jush need to tap zish wock wif a twig den, boof! Wa'er!" Courtney said, tapping the rock with her tiny palm-wood twig.
The rock started to shake then it cracked open. Water poured freely from the crack.
Courtney picked up her terracotta pot and filled it, then took a drink herself.
Shildr did the same. It was the sweetest water he'd ever tasted. To his surprise, it was cool and refreshing.
"You could almost say it was magic!" Courtney said, her curled tail wagging.
"Yeah... Magic." Shildr repeated, his heart aching for his pack. |

"What's wrong Shildr? You seem sad..." Courtney asked.
"It's.... Nothing." the dark Lupora said quickly.
"Yeah, and I'm Krinadon's uncle."
"Fine. I just miss my pack. Ursa used to do magic like that. Beautiful, wonderful magic, but I'll never be able to see it again." Shildr said, looking at his paws.
"I know how you feel." Courtney said, putting a small paw on his. "My mother taught me that trick... but when the Nightfall Bandits came, she was killed, like the rest of my family. Now I live with a herd of Qitari." she said. Her eyes suddenly brightened. "I could take you to them, if you want!"
"Er..... Okay?" Shildr said shrugging.
"Great! C'mon!" the grey Zolnixi said, speeding off with the clay pot of water.
"H-hey! Wait up!" Shildr cried, his paws slipping through the sand. |

"This is stupid. We've been walking for a few hours, and I have a thorn in my paw! When are we going to get there?" Shildr said grouchily.
It was almost Setting-Sun-Sky before they reached the camp. A cold wind had started to blow in from the Griffi Mountains, making the desert sand feel like ice on Shildr's paws. Courtney, on the other hand, didn't seem to mind.
The camp was a bunch of multi-coloured tents. Each was as large as a small house, and each, as Shildr noted, had a different pattern on it.
As Courtney padded into the camp, two ruby-coloured Qitari foals galloped out of the largest tent to greet her.
"Courtney! Courtney!" the two cried in unison. |
