I searched in the forums, searched it on google, and it always said to change the clothes, you go to inventory, click on the item, and select 'use item'. I've been clicking on the item, but 'use item' has not been a choice. What do I do?

You've gotten it down pretty well, but here's a quick walkthrough:
1 Go to your inventory
2 Click on an item, and then click the "Use Item" just below your inventory. This will send the item to your wardrobe.
3 Go to your wardrobe and click the last tab, labeled "Items"
4 Equip any item you want! Greyed out items are ones you haven't obtained yet, but anything with a white background is wearable!

As an extra note, if use item is not an available option then it is not an avatar item.
