Information on Regeneration has been moved to its own guide Here.

What is an essence? An overview.

Essences are the items used to create new sylesti using the Generator.

- They are tradeable items.

- They are a consumable- a one-time use items able only to create a single sylesti per Essence.

- There are three different rarities of Essence.

- The higher the essence rarity, the better the colour fidelity (accuracy.)

- The highest amount of trait points a Generated pet can have is 4.

- Mutators and Trait Disruptors cannot be used on Generated sylesti.

- Pet Dyes can be used on a Generated sylesti.

- Restricted traits CAN be generated using Mystical and Divine Essences, so long as the player has the correct Restricted Trait Disruptor or Trait Scroll. It costs one RTD per restricted trait from that set. It costs one scroll of the correct Trait per trait.

- Pets made via the Generator are created as Adolescents, and are placed directly in the stable. From the time of creation, they take 18 days to reach breedable (Adult) age

- Essences cannot be 'stacked' in the generator- multiple Regular essences do not make an Enhanced essence etc.

- Divine Generated pets will be created Infertile, and thus permanently unable to breed.

Types of essence

Regular

"A Regular Essence of a [Species]. This is required and consumed when using the Generator to create an Adolescent Regular [Species].

Allows 2 Trait Points and is fairly accurate with colours."

Regular Essences are the most common of the essence types. For this reason, they tend to be the cheapest to buy.
This kind of Essence gives give two Trait Points, allowing for the creation of pets that are either one vis or two carry, and have some colour swing. While they can be decent, they have been known to sometimes be almost hilariously, painfully off.

Regular Essence Regular Species Generated Stats:
HP: 150-180
Mana: 90
Other: 12-30, averagely* between 14-18

Regular Essence Fabled Species Generated Stats:
HP: 195-225
Mana: 110
Other: 21-36

(*frankly, luffox are an outlier and should I count them? They have the lowest rung of Str, but one of the highest Agi of all species, including fabled; they tie with the lighira, and lose out only to griffi and ryori. Hence why we include the 'averagely' bit.)

Enhanced

"A Enhanced Essence of a [Species]. This is required and consumed when using the Generator to create an Adolescent Enhanced [Species].

Allows 4 Trait Points and is mostly accurate with colours."

Enhanced Essences are rather more rarely found than Regular Essences, and thus are more expensive.
This kind of give four Trait Points (two vis/ one vis+two carries/ four carries) and have less colour swing.

Enhanced/ Mystical/ Divine Essence Regular Species Generated Stats:
HP: 200-220
Mana: 100
Other: 16-40, averagely between 20-24

Enhanced/ Mystical/ Divine Essence Fabled Species Generated Stats:
HP: 260-300
Mana: 120
Other: 28-48

Mystical

"A Mystical Essence of a [Species]. This is required and consumed when using the Generator to create an Adolescent Mystical [Species].

Allows 4 Trait Points and is extremely accurate with colours.
Allows the use of Restricted Traits. For each Restricted Trait used, a Trait Disruptos/Scroll of that Trait Set is required and will be consumed on use."

Mystical Essences cannot be found, and can only be obtained from the Diamond Shop or as a prize from a Trait Design Contest.
Like the Enhanced Essences, Mystical Essences give four Trait Points (two vis/ one vis+two carries/ four carries.) Unlike Regular and Enhanced Essences this kind has next to no colour swing.

Divine

"A Divine Essence of a [Species]. This is required and consumed when using the Generator to create an Adolescent Divine [Species].

Allows 6 Trait Points and is extremely accurate with colours.
Allows the use of Restricted Traits. For each Restricted Trait used, a Trait Disruptos/Scroll of that Trait Set is required and will be consumed on use.
A Pet Generated by a Divine Essence will be permanently Infertile and unable to Breed."

Divine Essences cannot be found, available only from the Diamond Shop. They are the most expensive four types of Generator Essence.
Divine Essences give six Trait Points (three vis/ two vis+four carries/ four vis+two carries/ six carries.)
As these pets cannot be bred at all, being automatically Infertile, there is no reason to make one that is anything other than three vis.

How to get Essences

There are many ways to get Essences, some more certain than others.

Definite:

Diamond Shop
- Carries all three rarities of Essence
> Regulars cost 250
> Enhanced cost 750
> Mysticals cost 1000
> Mystical Essences of the Seasonal Fableds may be on sale over the duration of their Festival for 750
> Divines cost 2000

Trade Broker
- Prices vary by factors such as pet species, rarity of the Essence, demand ect.
- There will not always be every given rarity or species in any given combination, due to the fact that it is user-supplied.

Item Auctions Forum
- Like the Trade Broker, price and availability vary
- Unlike the Trade Broker, you can potentially barter or trade for Essences that other players are offering.
- You can post [LF] (Looking For) and [T] (Trading) threads there to try and obtain specific Essences from other players.

Random drop, Specific species:
Rare chance (~0.0002/ 1 in 4444 chance per interaction); Regular or Enhanced Essence:

- Battling can give you the Essence of a defeated species as a Loot Drop.
- Nurturing can give you the Essence of a nurtured species in a popup (as akin to the more common Festival Currency Drops, albeit year-round.) (as of the Nurturing grounds overhaul, it does not have a popup and merely appears in the infobox)

Random drop, Random species:
Rare chance; Regular or Enhanced Essence:

- Mission Satchels of any difficulty level.
- Jinxie's Jamboree.
- Treasure Boxes bought from The Peddler.
- Final chest after beating last boss in a Dungeon.

Other:

The other ways to obtain Mystical Essences without buying them are:

- if you have a design picked in a "Design a Gene/Mutation" thread. If your design is chosen, you will get a Mystical Essence of the species it the Gene or Mutation is implemented on. It seems as of Winter 2018-19 at the least that having a trait picked now allows the player a free pick of any Mystical essence for each trait that was chosen.

- Possible prize from reaching one of the final doors in the Pick-a-Door game during Festivals.

- Often a prize for placing as a winner in various other Festival based forum games (eg, Colouring Page, Gingerbread House Building.)

- Potential prize from Fall Festival's Spooky Shop

Basic overview of Genetics

There are three types of trait, genetically- Visible traits, Carried traits, and Hidden traits.
Visible traits display in Blue, and on untested Tamed, Offspring, and Exclusive pets, they are the only kind you can see.

Generated pets will display their genetics without being tested, and can only have either Visible or Carried traits; they cannot have Hidden traits (effectively a carried trait hidden by a more dominant Visible trait in the same slot. Pets with Hidden traits have a 50/50 chance of passing either the Visible or the Hidden down to any offspring)

When youre picking traits for your generated pet, its best to go with the ones you want- with Essences, you can pick any traits so long as they aren't Restricted traits (See below)
Basic genetics dominance rundown- in each slot, N (No Vis) is the most dominant trait, and following that trait dominance runs down the alphabet in order- A > B > C > D > E > etc.

(Here is an awful picture demonstrating the order of trait dominance as a visual aid.)

If you cross two Generated pets with different traits in the same trait slot, they will produce offspring with the more dominant trait as Vis and the other parents trait as a Hidden (So if you crossed a generated Sylvorpa with M2: (BB) Splash Wings with a generated sylvorpa with M2: (HH) Lotus Flowers, youd get an offspring that was M2: (BH) Splash Wings (though it would show as M2: (BB) Splash Wings until the pet was genetically tested, regardless)
This M2: (BH) Splash Wings offspring, could go on to pass either the B gene or the H gene on to its own offspring.

Restricted Traits

All relevant information- what the traits look like, when they were introduced, what themes they originate from, disruptors and mutators related to them- can be found in our guide on Restricted Traits and Majestic Pets.

There are certain traits which you cannot generate onto a pet unless you are using a Mystical or Divine Essence. These traits (should) show up as red text, and are marked with an * after the trait name.
In order to Generate a pet with these traits, the player will need either the RTD or Trait Scroll relevant to that trait. One item will be consumed per relevant trait matching the item.
If they are selected and the player is not in possession of the required item, the Generate Pet button will not allow you to create the pet.

Restricted Trait sets share common naming theme amongst them.

Under specific circumstances it has previously been possible to generate pets with any Essence and no RTD/Scroll with certain Restricted traits. These are:
Valentines Lace, During Festival of Love
Lucky Dust, during Fortune Festival.
It is unclear if this allowance is still in effect.

How to load and use an Essence

To use an Essence, you must first own the kind of Essence that you wish to use, and then you must go to the Generator.
When in the Generator, either load one of your own previously saved designs or create a new one.

(For Example purposes, we will be using the only design that we've ever actually generated; as it was done during the Festivals of Love 2016, we could generate it with Valentines Lace)

Once you have the design you want, hit the text that says "No Essence Loaded".

This will bring up a popup that shows your Mystical Essences.

You can swap between rarity levels by clicking on the text that says "Mystical", "Enhanced", and "Regular".

Scroll down to the species you want and click it to select, then hit "Load Essence"

Done correctly, the Generator's display should now look like this:

You can then hit "Generate Pet"

For us in this particular generation there was relatively little over-all colour swing in the male, but more in the female, as seen in the resultant pets
Generator Design / Generated Pet

If there are more Trait Points used than a selected Essence allows, the Trait Points counter will be displayed:

When within the Essence limit, it looks like this:

Changing between different levels of Essence for the same species will retain all selected colours and traits, while selecting a different species' Essence (or just swapping via dropdown list as shown) will retain all colours but remove all traits:

How to Save/Load Generator designs for future use

If you dont have an essence that you need for a design, you can save the design and load it later.

To save a design:

Locate this button:

Clicking it should cause the name to vanish and the "Design Successfully Saved!" Text to appear

(if you go to "Add more Design Slots", it should be noted that buying more slots will clear the current generator screen, species, colours, and traits alike. If you have a design open that you have not yet saved, either open a new, clear generator window to buy the new slots, or make sure you Copy the design's image URL before hitting "Purchase Slots")

To find a design that you have saved:

Click on the "Saved Designs" button.

Hit the "My Designs" button.

Alter the dropdowns for species, Sorting, and time created and hit "Update List".

Click the design you want to load to select it- it should highlight in yellow even when the cursor is moved away.

Scroll down and click "Load to Generator"

Non-Generator Essences- aka Catalysts
"Festival Essences", "Frost Essences" (/"fressence", Winter Fest only), or "Catalysts" (/"cata")

During some Festivals, there may be items referred to as "Essences" in the chats or item trade forums.
These "Festival Essences" are used in whatever Festival-specific activity is used to create Exclusive Themed Pets, and cannot be used in the Generator.

They are obtained via participating in the Festival, whether via winning them from battling in the Festival Zone, by buying them using Festival Currency, or other means, and can only be used for the duration of that single festival (they either cease to exist or become expired festival currency come the same festival the next year.)

Examples are
Frost Essence (+ a Generator Essence to show comparison)
Common Pet
(vs )
Fabled
(vs )
Majestic colouration
(vs )

Summer Festival Catalyst
Regular colouration / Restricted colouration
/

Traits on these pets will always still have the element of randomness (unless, say, you are locking and having a hidden trait in a trait slot such as the Nytekries M1 or M3. In that case, where there are only two possible traits for the game to select from ordinarily, and with the Splicer in effect, the trait is forced to be vis A with hidden B)

In example, here are two lighs who both had G3/M2 locked:

Majestic pets will always only be able to have traits of their specific trait set, with a maxumum of two.

Colours will always be of the Theme that the Essence or Catalyst was for.
