When people ping me (I believe its called that at least) I don't get any message? How is this possible..
As far as I know they type my name right...

do they put a comma at the end? A proper ping goes like this: @usernamehere, and if it's missing the @ and , it wont work.

they do the @ and the , and the right username ... but still I get no message of it..

I think pinging must also be done at the top of the post? Are they perhaps doing it somewhere in the middle of their text?

The system sucks and needs to be improved.
