I'm a newb at this game, and there are a few phrases I was wondering about.

If you can, please tell me the definition of the following:

Tagged (relating to Sylesti's)

I would also like to know the purpose of carried mutations/genes or what the do. Are they able to be passed on through breeding even though they aren't visible?

Tagged - A themed pet that has a label on it on it's profile & a star. A purebred is the offspring of two tagged pets.

Carries - If you breed two carried traits together, you should get a visible of that Gene. Sometimes carried go onto their offspring also as carries. (Depending on your luck)

I finally understand!

clarifying that the 'tag' is seen in the genetics section of a pet's profile, and is searchable in Advanced Search, while the star is located in pet lineages, and will tell you what theme a pet that has it is if hovered over.

Carried traits form a trinity of terms relating to pet genetics, that being Visible, Carried, and Hidden (Hiddens are also called 'Carried' sometimes, for the fact that they aren't vis traits.)
We'll use this pet as an example

If you go to her in profile genetics you see
Gene One: Red Tailed Cockatoo
Gene Two: Shimmer Tips
Gene Three: None
Mutation One: None
Mutation Two: Gallant Armor
Mutation Three: None

Where Shimmer tips is in italics because it is carried and can only be seen because she is gene tested.

Her Advanced Search genetics show like this (it also shows in her image URL):

Gene 1: (EG) Red Tailed Cockatoo
Gene 2: (NA) Shimmer Tips
Gene 3: (NN) Nothing
Mutation 1: (NN) Nothing
Mutation 2: (EE) Gallant Armor
Mutation 3: (NN) Nothing

her G2 is Carried Shimmer Tips
And her M2 is Vis. Gallant Armor

Children of hers can inherit either E or G from her in G1, N(othing) or A in G2, and E from M2.
Whether or not any of these traits would be visible would depend on the traits of the nyte she was bred with.
She will never produce an offspring with vis G3, M1, or M2, though they could get a carried trait from the other parent.
Her G2 is 50/50 going to pass down the N that would make a trait inherited from the other parent Carried.
If the other parent has and M2 with a letter between A and D, their trait will be the visible and make Gallant Armor carried. if the other parent has Gallant, Storm or Tribal armor, Gallant Armor will be the visible. If they pass an N, then the offpring would have Gallant Armor as a Carry.
Depending on what the genetics of the other parent are, what the G1 would be is unknown. They'd have to also have a G for the offspring to have a chance of Mystic Feathers as vis. though.


In the Breeding Grounds, if you click 'test breed' with an untested pet, it will show predictions based on their 'known' genetics (including any vis. mutations a hatchling has despite listing as 'unknown' on their profile), and not acknowledge the 'unseen' carried traits (actually, I can't remember if it DOES register hidden traits on untesteds, I'm having vague memories that it might?)
Anyhow, it won't show them, but if they're bred it uses their actual genetics in egg generation.

I wanted to add that there are some very early theme pets that don't have a tag. These aren't very common to encounter. They do exist though and their offspring would still be considered purebred. These are themes released from Winter 2012, Valentine 2013, and Spring 2013. A couple of the themes have been released again with tagged versions - the reindeer qitari and the valentine bulbori.

The tagged system was first introduced in Fall 2013 but it was already made in advance for the Summer 2013 pets to work with the system so they became tagged, too, when it went into place. However, nothing was able to be added to the themed pets from before that point.

Again, it's unlikely to run into these themes and their offspring if you're a newer player but I figured it's worth mentioning.
