how do you start a private chat?

You click on a person's username and and click send message while you are on that person's profile then just write down your message. Or you can go to your inbox to the compose spot and enter a person's username in the to place and the subject in the subject line then enter your message in the place below.

You need to have added that person as your friend and they must've added you (friends on Sylestia is kind of a two way thing) and then you'll be able to see them on the list of who's online, click their name and start a chat.
