AP: For buying avi items in the wardrobe and not much else.

Upgrade attacks: you have to be in the lost grove for that. (Note: DON"t go in there wht a level 60 party unless you have max stats and amazing equip...)
Also it'll take about a day of grinding to rank one attack. Or something like that.

to add on to what was already said,
to level up your pet's attacks you have to use the in the Lost Grove, each time you use an attack it gives you something around 0.01% towards the second star of that attack

AP are Advancement points, earned for things like advancing the plot, nurturing a certain number of pets, battling enemies of similar or higher level than your pets, doing dungeons etc.

In addition to what was already stated, it is also used for buying extra design slots in the Generator and extra party preset save slots

Follow the game storyline, its a zone that you cant access until you complete Astryls tranquility and sweet blossom farm
