lore:

in the small bay off the shore of Astrea is a small facility facing the water. the facility is there for one reason; to research and take care of the mer living in the area. the facility has three boats in it's docks for taking samples, giving paid tours to tourists, and taking in injured mer. it also has an attached visitors center where some mer may be taken while they are heal from their injuries, and tourists can pay to see them, after all, a facility such as this one does not pay for itself.

life, though usually peaceful for the mer, has become more...interesting as more and more tourists swarm the bay in hordes to see the only place in the word where you are guaranteed to find mer in the wild. tourists come from far and wide to see - and sometimes even touch- the mer. lately, there have been more boats out on the waters, despite the fact that the facility does not allow outsiders to boat in the waters or swim unsupervised. there are more staff, too. strangers who smell like the city and expensive perfumes and have shiny watches and jewelry. they talk in hushed whispers when there are mer nearby. and take pictures of every mer to enter the bay...

general info:

unlike humans, mer do not have a biological gender in the sense humans do. mer have both sets of genitals, and may either have a feminine or masculine appearance as a remnant of when they used to be separate genders. because of this, mer decide what pronouns they use based on what they like. they do not posses any magical powers, and are in all senses, animals with human intelligence. there have been many debates on whether they should classified as animals or not. they pick u the languages of wherever they live, so most of the mer in the area are fluent in astrean, mermaids have no species specific languages and only speak human languages.

there are two major types of mer:

top side:

topside mer are mer that live closer to the surface of the ocean, and are seen more often as a result. because of this, topside mer take on a more tropical look with attributes from many types of tropical fish in the area from which they come from. mer, however, are not stationary creatures by nature, and are known to migrate from place to place, so these mer may be found anywhere.

deep sea:

deep sea mer are mer who are born in the deeper parts of the ocean, near the bottom or the "midnight" zone where no sunlight can get to. because of this, they are mostly dark in color and their fins may have barbs, as the purpose of their coloration is to blend in, not to attract a mate.

aside from the two major categories, there are many types of sub-species, which are listed below

top-side:

lionfish: these mer have a tail similar to that of a lionfish, with large fancy barbs and gorgeous stripes, they range in color from a tawny, sand like color to a bright fearsome red. their barbs do contain the same toxin as the lionfish, and like lionfish they are not aggressive.

seahorse: these mer have the tail of a seahorse, which they use to grip onto the rock while they sleep and eat, relying on the tides or a friend with a different type of tail to take them where they want to go. they are also known as kelpies, as they tend to live in massive kelp forests with lots of kelp to grab onto and use the kelp to drag themselves where they want to be. they can range in color from red, green, yellow and blue

manta ray: these mer have a tail shaped like a mana ray, complete with the massive wings! they use these wings to travel the same way regular manta ray would, and prefer to stay at the bottom of the shallows in the sand, they come in the normal coloration of the manta ray with greyish white on the bottom.

sharkfin: although called sharkfin mer, this category extends to not only mer with any type of shark fin, but any type of dolphin fin as well. these mer are found mostly around the pacific islands, though they can be found else where due to migration.

generic: these mer are the most common, they a simple, one color tail with a delicate looking tail fin fin similar to that of a betta fish's fin turned horizontally. despite the delicate look of these fins, however, they are not as fragile as they appear, and are in fact, quite strong for something so thin. they can be any color.

deep sea:

cecaelia: this refers to mer which have the limbs of an octopus or squid instead of a tail. scientists are unsure if they are a rarer breed, or just harder to find due to their ability to squeeze into smaller places and their living in the deeper, darker parts of the ocean. unlike octopus, these mer do not have the ability to change color to blend in with their surroundings. they can come in a dark red, black, or dark grey.

glowfish: this type of mer has a mostly black or dark grey tail (similar to that of the generic mer) and flared fins with streaks of bioluminescent areas ranging in color from green, blue, pink and purple. they use their bioluminescence as a way to see in the dark, and often take pride in how bright they are.

generic - dark: this refers to the type of generic mer found in the deeper waters, these mer, unlike top side generic mer, are dark in color. ranging from dark greys, blacks, dark navy blues and dark reds and greens. they are known to tag along with glowfish in order to use their light to guide the way.
