every time i try to add a picture it only shows an icon that i need to click to see the image.

Type:
[*img]pet image address[*/img]
Without the *, and replace "pet image address" with the pet's image address

wait where can you find the image address?

Right click the image you want, then there should be the option to copy the image address.
(Although if I remember correctly the text for it can vary depending on your browser.)
