what pets are on your team, and in what order (slot 1/slot2, since you wont have 3 yet)

yeah, party slots are bought at esior's haven and sanctuary of saerielle (once you get there) the ap and diamonds thing is for buying party preset slots (which are for quick-loading teams once you have several different ones)

The question of 'which pets and what order' remains the one I need answered

So in my party Phantom is in the first slot and Wither is in the second slot... Do you need anything else?

Okay, first thing to note: Phantom doesn't have his element set.

Second is that Whither is an earth element- Earth is the most dedicated of Tank elements.
Tank pets go in slot one of the party to do exactly that; tank hits (enemies aim for that slot the most)

Third is that the only equipment between them is a single uncommon relic. equipment is a MAJOR part of pet setup

Okay, so there's two 'types' of element:
Physical: Water, Earth, and Air, and
Magical: Shadow, Light, and Fire.

Which of these types an element is determines if it uses Strength+Physical Damage stat or Intelligence+Magical Damage stat for its attacks
(While a pet also uses Str or Int for a little defense regardless of their element, they make no use of the other Damage stat at all. for this reason, making sure a pet's relic has the correct Damage type is very important! Take this griffi that I just raised to lv30 for boards for instance! a bit less than 1/4 of her damage stat is from her Str stat, a bit more than 1/4 from her prof bonus, and roughly 1/2 is from her relic's Damage Bonus.

Okay, so in party setup:
Slot 1 is the 'tank slot' usually (depends on the team setup, but the typical team is tank/healer(/buffer)/attacker)
Tank elements (elements which are good at tanking) are Earth, Water, Shadow (and sometimes Light). They variously focus around keeping the opponents attacking specifically them, buffing their defence, absorbing enemy hp, etc. They keep the other party pets safe.

Healer element is Light- it's the only element that's 100% designed around keeping the whole party healthy. Water can also to a more limited extent heal the party (once it's lv30+. Where light does it as an effect of its offensive moves and non-offensive moves, water needs to set up its lv30 or lv70 moves), but can't really act as a proper party buffer until later levels

The Attackers are Air and Fire, which are all about damage- Air being single-target damage, Fire being spread damage. They have no defensive or healing moves related to their element (just mend and block), but if you have a well-set-up team, they don't need to worry about it and can focus on taking down the enemy.

Obviously you don't have all three slots yet, but that gives an overview and might help with picking what you want to assign Phantom as.

For Profs and Equipment!
equips:
Step 1, Physical elements want Strength-based equips (Assassin, Myrmidon), Magical want Intelligence-based equips (Illusionist, Evoker)
Then
step 2, is the pet the tank or attacker? If it's a tank, it wants Agility-type equips (Assassin, Illusionist), if it's an attacker, you want Dexterity-type equips (Myrmidon, Evoker)
Healers and buffers tend to lean towards Dex-type, but since they don't need dex the same way as fire and air (which use crits to inflict their base moves' debuffs) you can substitute in agi-types if needed

so, for example, an air pet, being a Strength+Attacker element, gets Myrmidon, while a shadow tank, int+tank, gets Illusionist

Also, uncommon equips are garbage so you want to get at least rare equips for them asap. You can check the Broker, or learn how to do Missions so you can have a chance at equip drops from the reward satchels (honestly I recommend learning how to do them anyway- there's a guide pinned in the player guides forum- because they're an excellent source of town reputation, gold, healing items, and equips)

Profs, Tanks will get some combo of HP, offense, and Agility. exact combo will vary depending on the pet's stats, the player's style, and the element.

Attackers and healers are almost always full offense+dex (most at lv70 are 3offense/2dex)

As a note,
Dexterity controls: Critical hit chance, Accuracy, and Speed
Agility controls: Defenses, Evasion, and Speed.
They share speed equally, so a pet that's 100dex+300agi is the same speed as one that's 200+200 or one that's 300+100, so despite what the stat names might imply, pets that are full up on dex and no agi aren't any slower than their agility-based counterparts.

So:
- Decide Phantom's element

- Set Phantom's prof point.

- Swap Whither to slot1 of the party to be the earth tank he is (earth can be a bit tricky to use at low levels, I will say that- absolutely stellar at higher levels if they're your style, my own main tank is one, but many people find them hard)

- Get them equipped (assassin for Whither, and... whatever is appropriate for Phantom)

- See how it goes!
