It's best to start with carried traits when you first generate your pets, and to breed them together in a way that covers as many slots as you can.

Say you're using regular essences, and go with visibles.

Male: (V)G1
Female: (V)G2

The offspring would come out with carried G1 and G2. You're basically waiting a full month for these to grow into what you could already have generated.

Now say you go with carried traits instead.

Male: (C) G1 and (C) G2
Female: (C)M1 and (C) M2

For all of those traits slots, G1, G2, M1, and M2, there's a 50% chance the individual trait will pass on to the offspring. It relies on RNG which is the risky bit. The offspring could come up with nothing, OR, it has an equal chance of coming out with a carry for all of them (G1, G2, M1, and M2.)

I'm not sure what you mean by using a mix of essences, but if you mean regular and enhanced essences then you've got a chance for RNG gold.

Getting a 6-trait breeder is the first MAJOR step for a 6V project. An enhanced essence can cover 4 carries, while a regular can cover 2 - that means you can immediately start breeding your pets with a chance of 6-carry offspring. Won't be a very likely result, mind you, but even a 3-trait offspring would make a good breeder for future generations. :)

Also, be sure to stack the most traits possible on the MALE. (So if you have an enhanced, use it for the male.) A male means unlimited chances to pass on the four traits; a female means you only get ONE chance per breeding cooldown, which will slow you down in the long run.

I found a way to show what general colour an offspring will be, even if it's a hatchling! You can include it on the post if you'd like, if you want to hear it PM me. That goes for everyone else too! ^-^

If say, I have a four-carried pet, would it be better for me to:
- Breed it to another four-carried
- Or breed it to a two-vis?

Breed it to a 4-carry is my recommendation! You'll have a higher margin of failure with the possibility of a no-trait offspring, but if the odds play in your favor the results will well be worth it.

I can go into further depth if I know the kind of project you're working on :)

Thank you!
It's not for anything in particular, it's just that I run into that once in awhile and am not sure which one to choose.

Which trait should I select if generating a enhaced, and two regulars for a 6 vis project?

I'd recommend...

Male 1: G123 M1
Female: M23
(slim chance of 6-trait offspring, and gene pool will vary between all possible combinations)

Male 2: two-carry, whatever 2 traits you're most eager to see since these traits will be more present in the gene pool.

Can you do a project without essences? I'm trying to breed this zolnixi:

G1: Tribal Stripes
G2: None
G3: Lucky Runes
M1: Feathered Tail
M2: Sugar Plum Flower
M3: Butterfly Wings
But I don't really know where to start, and which traits to use. Also, I can't afford the zolnixi essences on the trade broker.

Hmm...

With the high broker cost of pet dyes I can't exactly say that there's a cheaper option anymore.

If you don't mind nurturing literally 20,000 - 30,000 pets to get a ton of scales, you could possibly find two unrelated, fertile nixi available on the advanced search with the traits you need and then dye them to the project colors.

Be warned that lesser dyes have an insanely unfair color swing and will occasionally give you the wrong color entirely, so be prepared with spare dyes on hand if you go for this route.

As for the broker price of pet dyes, now that the festival is wrapped up they'll be significantly more expensive. Usually it costs me ~3 million gold to get enough dyes to cover a pair; essences are significantly cheaper than buying dyes, so for a project like yours essences is the better option.

Or... nurturing. Hours upon hours of nurturing...
