I took Winter back to the oncologist on 28Sep23. His left leg appears to be cancer-free, but the tumor on his right leg has regrown. The cancer doesn't seem to have metastasized. Rather than amputate his right leg, the veterinarian is putting Winter on a chemotherapy regime and is also going to try treating the tumor with gold nanoparticle thermal therapy.
Update on my dog, Winter. There's still a remnant of the cancerous tumor on his right front leg. Worse, the wound is badly infected, and the infection is reducing the ability of healthy granulation tissue to form. We have to clear up the infection before the oncologist can destroy the tumor remnant.
However, the remnant is small, and the un-stressed area of the wound is showing the growth of healthy new tissue.
Update of 18Nov23: When we re-bandaged Winter's leg last night, we saw that the wound showed reduced signs of infection.
Update of 23Nov23: Signs of infection have diminished further, and healthy new tissue continues to (slowly) grow, beginning to cover the exposed bones.
I will not post photos of the gruesome sight here.
If you have a pet who is or will be undergoing cancer treatment, and you'd like a better idea of what to expect, feel free to PM me. I will share the photos with you if it seems as though they might be helpful to you.
Update of 28Nov23: When I re-bandaged Winter's leg I saw that the bones were almost entirely covered.
Update of 09Dec23: Still a tiny speck of bone visible. The remnant of the tumor is still there, but shriveling.
Update of 13Dec23: I took Winter to his oncologist today, and she removed the dead tumor tissue. There are no longer any visible signs of the tumor. Winter now gets to go a whole month without having to go to the oncologist's office.
Update of 16Dec23: We changed Winter's bandage very late last night & saw no exposed bone!
Update of 02Jan24: The wound continues to close up. Skin is regrowing, though slowly. Winter has completed his long course of antibiotics, and the infection appears to be gone.
Update of 07Jan24: Trying to figure out whether Winter is having "accidents" because of a urinary tract infection or because he thinks that, since he's not well, he can get away with it. Wound continues to heal.
Update of 10Jan24: I took Winter to the veterinarian's office to have them check on his urinary tract status. Meanwhile, his rate of "accidents" has dropped, and the wound looks much better--more like a really bad skinned place than a major wound. We're keeping it bandaged and covered, regardless.
Update of 13Jan24: Winter is feeling well enough to be a brat now and then.
Update of 18Jan24: Winter's oncologist found that the tumor is back. It is small and puny, however, and on Wednesday, 24Jan, I take Winter back to the oncologist, who will laser the tumor to death. Winter will begin taking two home chemotherapy drugs, in hopes of finally killing the damn thing.
Update of 26Jan24: The treatment site on Winter's leg is much smaller than for previous treatments. He's taking two chemo drugs, plus antibiotics, plus milk thistle, and he has to begin taking a thyroid supplement.
Update of 05Feb24: The new site is healing, but Winter keeps losing his appetite, which is worrisome.
10Feb24: Winter's appetite is back, plus the wound is looking better.
21Feb24: The tumor is apparently gone, but it created a new one before dying. We are now evaluating three possible treatments: radiation, intravenous chemotherapy, or amputating his leg. This is rather awful.
29Feb24: Initial viewing of Winter's chest X-rays doesn't show signs of metastasis. This is good. Must wait a day or so for the oncologist to study the X-rays, of course. The veterinarian's staff also gave Winter a bath! Unlike most dogs, Winter likes baths.
Update of 20Mar24: Winter had defeated the infection in his leg, only to have it recur this week. He's back on antibiotics.
28Mar24 update: Winter and I spent 24 hours longer than planned at the Washington State University's Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Unfortunately, they found he is not a candidate for radiation therapy, and they are not optimistic about his chances with intravenous chemotherapy. I'm going to confer with his regular veterinarian and his oncologist in Edmonds. The only good news is that it turns out he's been getting around fairly well without using the affected right front leg. His muscle tone is good, except for in the affected leg, where the muscles have atrophied a bit. This indicates he might do better than I had feared if the leg must be amputated.
10Apr24: The oncologist thinks amputation is Winter's best chance at this point. Intravenous chemotherapy would shrink the tumor but not get rid of it. Spouse and I are taking Winter to a consult with the orthopedic surgeon on 18Apr24. I am very sad about this.
18Apr24: So the surgeon thinks Winter will actually do well after the amputation of his cancerous leg. His other limbs are strong, and much of his difficulty getting around is due to trying to use the painful leg. There's just nothing left for getting rid of the cancer other than this drastic surgery. It's scheduled for 01May24.
