Most of the frost from this morning has melted by now, but after some searching you find a little trail where the grass has stopped growing so much as in other places.
Numbat looks pleased. "Well done! Now watch closely," he says, taking out a snare.
He takes you through the basics of setting it up, how you need to place it in different ways for the thing you're trying to catch and so on. By the time you've set up a couple you're fairly confident you could use snares if you absolutely had to.
Basic snare knowledge added to proficiencies
"Do you want me to take you through some more snares somewhere else or do you want to try it on your own?" he asks.
"I suppose I should try it on my own now," Asteria says.

Orc and goblin clans don't usually head this far out of the southern territories. You may encounter another higher being, but in a forest as large as this you'll be unlikely to find anyone once you've gone in a certain way.
You're able to cut a line in the bark, letting golden sap seep out and quickly form a kind of scab that is easy to see.
As you head in, it slowly gets dim as the trees get larger and older and block out the sun more. But there's always dappled light to lead the way. At this time of year the trees don't have many leaves left on them, most of them under your feet now. If this were Goldsky, it would be much darker.
The leaves rustle under you and Brazentalon's feet, up to your ankles in places and all colours from green to reddish-brown. At the bottom they are more rotted but thankfully dry.
You enter a clearing. You know something's off because the trees don't grow in the perfect circle making up the space. In the centre you notice a dead stump of a tree.

I look at the clearing suspiciously. I touch and knock on the stump and wonder what happened to make the clearing like this. I look at Brazentalon, "Well, we probably should keep going," I say. I look around the clearing one more time before I go.
(Starpup5 is travelling to a dwarven settlement at the foothills before the mountains of the northern territories. Right now she hasn't got winter gear but will need it to go any further. So basically I'll probably make it that the mountains are a no-go without gear at this time of year but there are settlements before then that you can get it)
The yeti makes a keening noise, and it's clear to see it doesn't want to go any further upriver. It clambers up the riverbank, looking down at you from on top - not going your way but not leaving either.
Delirious looks for a place to get back up onto dry land before trying to figure out which way she needs to travel to get to the mountains and colder areas.

You aren't stopped by anyone as you make your way back.
You walk in the door to almost walk into Balthur. He jumps, before frowning.
"Where have you been? Knight came in on his own and..." he trails off.

He passes you a few snares.
4 snares added to inventory
"You know what you're doing. Just meet back up at the camp when you're finished," he says, disappearing off to lay his own snares.

"Out for a morning stroll." He shrugs. "I prefer waking up early whenever possible." He blinks. "What?"

The stump is cooler than you would expect it to be, and makes a hollow noise as you knock on it. A small dent in the bark is made after you strike it.
You haven't heard of a formation like this before, and the only thing that might give you clues is this unusual stump.
Brazentalon nods, peering at the stump curiously.
You notice nothing new after looking over the clearing once more... other than, of course, the branches of the surrounding trees bend over to hide the clearing from the sky and still possess many leaves to further shield this strange occurance.

You head further upriver, having to leave the yeti behind. It still doesn't move though as it disappears from sight.
Eventually the bank becomes more of a slope and you can clamber out. Just grassland all around you, nothing else besides the river carving its way through the landscape.
The sun is heading towards the horizon to your left.
