Just doing it with a hatchet would be clumsier than a smaller, thinner knife, for example) It takes a while, and its a less than perfect job, but by the end of it the phoenix are fed and you have two animal skins left over. With more practice, you'll be able to make higher quality skins. 2 low quality small skins added to inventory

(I am fully aware of that I've skinned animals before. It's just I don't have a knife yet in my inventory.)

Asteria's doing it for her first time so I'm working on a kind of extra, case specific set of proficiencies that should develop as time goes on and produce better results in quicker times. I didn't know you knew your stuff about skinning and all that, so please correct me if I start babbling nonsense about it xD)

Numbat looks to the sun, holding a finger up and comparing the two to each other. "I would say give it a bit longer if you want to have a better chance of collecting more while still doing so before sundown. You're always balancing the two"

You hear scuffling from the undergrowth, and two scruffy looking hellhounds appear with a rabbit in tow.

"That was hard," Crimson sighs, leaving it by your feet. Emberpaw slumps to the ground, resting.
