"Well, you could say that," he muses. "I'd call it survival. Just do anything, and do it well. In my case I'm nothing but a smart-mouthed storytelling merchant. That reminds me of another story..."

He carries on with stories from his past and ones he's picked up. You pass the usual travellers going the other way, and at one point you see a messenger rush past you on a Critter you know to be called a horse. You don't catch a glimpse of what the figure looks like as they pass, kicking dust up in their wake.

Balthur coughs and splutters while the dust lingers in the air. "Ack, for goodness sake. Some people! Always thinking about where they gotta get to, and not anywhere between. Hooligan!" he bellows back at the departing shape of the messenger and their horse, waving a fist in the air.

All you can look at is the horse-shoe shaped footprints staining the road red. Eventually Balthur notices too and gives a snort. "And the idiot goes and runs his horse into the grave. Or another poor Critter trying to cross the road. Let's go and take a look and see which has spilt it's wretched blood."

It's not long before the two of you see a limp figure on the road ahead. The bloodied hoofprints start just after it. But this doesn't look like any Critter... and it's still breathing.

Crimson shakes her head, one of her ears flopping to the side in an adorable picture of confusion. What would we do that for? her posture seems to say.

It's been a long time since you were last here, when you were but a proud Elf growing up with your first Familiar, the Griffin, Skywhisper, but it is just how you remembered it. Elvenor stretches out before you and your Familiar, the Adventurer's Road snaking from the main gate and out into the big beyond.

Standing in the marketplace full of people from this city and those from distant lands, the world is at your fingertips - and Skywhisper's talons. How shall you explore it?

I absentmindedly stroke Skywhisper, thinking before I decide to head further into the marketplace to buy stuff or maybe just to look around.

(Skywhisper is male)

(Thanks, lemme put that in just now :P)

You delve deeper into the marketplace, Skywhisper by your side. With your Griffin by you, many of the strolling shoppers give you a wider berth. Most Elves don't tend to bring their Griffins around town, and instead leave them at the aeries, but sometimes - certainly in this case - if you're in a packed marketplace, having your Familiar with you is the best idea.

You scan the market stalls and their overzealous vendors shouting about all the goods under the sun. If you want anything at all, it will most likely be here.

I go over to the nearest one and see what they're selling.

"The best bows in all of Elvenor! Get your quivers, arrows and a variety of top notch bows here today!" the vendor announces to the passing shoppers. He spreads his arms wide towards all of the weapons he has strewn across his counters.

"Or come here!" the adjacent vendor shouts over the first. "And get truly efficient bows and other weapons. Buy one, get one half price!"

"Lancaster, we all know your bows have woodworm," the first vendor says in a flat voice, like he's been telling the other this all day. "Stop confusing the customers as to who is likely to give them something worth their time."

"Shut up, Farren. Do you have to do this every single time people pass?" the vendor, Lancaster, hisses.

Farren laughs. "Don't start something you can't win." He then seems to notice your interest, and greets you with a wide smile. "Evening, ma'am. What can I interest you and your Griffin in today?"

"Hello, how much would this bow cost?" I inquire.

"Well, it really depends. Are you trading in goods or favours?" Ferren asks. "If you mean buying things with gold... well, the Dwarves hoarded the last of the continent's gold hundreds of years ago, and they never use it to buy things from other Higher creatures. And since the Orcs and Goblins haven't been raiding, let alone seen, outside of their lands for as many years as that, none of the gold has gotten back into trading." He shrugs with a grin. "I read up on a little too much history than I should. But I'd be happy to give you a job to do to earn the bow though."
