Song 6
(warning, two points of view, one in gray and one in green)
"Mister Silhen! It's so GREEN!" I screamed in delight as I ran around in the forest. It was so verdant, so green, unlike the snowy forests that I remembered.
"Oi, hush boy, you'll scare away some deer or something."
I couldn't help myself. The scene seemed so magical. The sunny light from the sun above came down through the canopies of the trees in a spotty way, but it seemed to be so much warmer, so much more welcoming. There was even grass at my feet, and I instantly kicked off my shoes to feel it under my toes. It was so soft!
"Hey, put your shoes back on, for crying out loud." Mister Silhen picked up my shoes and grabbed me by the cloak he gave me. "And what did I tell you about keeping your hood on?"
"Sir, no one's here! And what am I hiding? We're not bandits!" I couldn't understand Silhen's worry to keep me hooded. He was wearing a hood too, but we were out of the mountains! "It's so much warmer here, and I'm going to sweat if I wear that hood for too long!"
"I'm telling you, keep it on!" he growled, pulling the hood back on my head. "Your white hair is giving me an eyesore."
"You should've seen everyone in my village, we all had white hair!" I ran farther ahead, my arms outstretched to feel the warmth. "All that snow probably made our heads white, like the mountain caps!"
"Yeah...whatever you say, kid." Mister Silhen was always so grumpy, ever since he found me. He didn't bother to keep up with me, but I didn't run too far from hearing distance.
"I can't wait to get my hands on whoever destroyed my village though!" I folded my hands behind my head, looking up at the trees. "They're gonna get what's coming to them...I'm gonna give 'em the ol' one-two, and ask 'em why they went after us." I practiced my punches, punching the air forcefully. I grinned, proud of my strength even if I was thirteen. "Mister Silhen, you think I can take 'em?"
"Oi...kid, keep your fantasies to yourself." He scratched his head and sighed. "Do you even know who did it?"
"I'll know 'em when I see him, I know it! He's probably a good for nothing bandit." I couldn't wait to get revenge on him. My village did nothing wrong, we were just people who minded their own business in the mountains. "I don't see why he would've destroyed my village...maybe a serial killer...do you know any kinda guys like that, Mister Silhen?"
"..."
We kept walking through the green forest. Birds tweeted around us, and a few squirrels jumped from tree to tree.
"He probably has a biiig bounty on his head! He probably is a mass village destroyer! You'd help me take him down, right, Mister Silhen??"
"Kid..."
"Yeah, you're a bounty hunter, you're gonna defeat all the bad guys and bring them to justice!" I pumped my fist in the air, for the victory that would come. "My friends and family probably would be proud of me--I mean us! They probably ran away to safety in some other mountain village. We can come back once we get the evil guy, right??"
Mister Silhen smacked me on the back, hard.
"OOF!" I fell forward, almost falling on my face, if it wasn't for catching myself.
"Kid...can you PLEASE be quiet until we get to the end of this forest?" Mister Silhen huffed. "You're so noisy..."
"Okay, okay," I pouted. I gripped for my hood and kept it on my head, seeing that he'd want that too. "...we could've split the bounty too..."
"Kid...please...be quiet..."
---
I was hiking through the snowy mountains when I came across his town. There was a bounty for a dragon from a kingdom in the valley nearby, calling for the head of a snow white dragon that breathed fire. It was reasonably large, but I couldn't say I had experience in killing dragons by myself. The dragon was said to be troublesome enough to threaten nearby villages, but no one could find it yet. Nevertheless, it was rumored that it could be found in the snow capped mountains. I suppose it made sense: snow white dragon, snow white mountain.
At a certain point in my hike, into the evening, I saw smoke in the distance. I thought it was friendly village smoke, especially since it was time to start the fireplaces. I started walking in the direction of the village, but as I kept going, the smoke increased in size. I couldn't tell if it was because I was getting closer, or...if it's my worst assumption.
Trudging through more snow, I found a small fir forest in the way. The smoke probably could've come from a tavern, at best, judging its size. The village was likely to be on the other side, so I went through the forest.
Once I got to the end of the forest, I saw the village. And, unfortunately, the smoke I saw from before the trek tripled in size. My heart beat tensely. Was I too late? Was the dragon already here?
I rushed to the village, and I could see the houses enveloped by flames. The heat could be felt from a few meters away, but I dared to get in, to find survivors of some sort, or even, dare I say, the dragon. I already heard a few screams on my way to the village, but I couldn't run any faster through the snow. As I walked through the snow, screams dulled into the noise of the flickering flames, burning the buildings down.
ROAAAAAAR!
Once I was in the village, I heard the dragon's roar. I hid behind some burnt rubble, and snuck closer to where the dragon could have been. I drew out my sword, ready to slay it, or at least go for its head. When I was closest to the dragon's cries, I peeked from around the corner of a burned house.
ROAAAAAAAARARR!
I was in shock. In the midst of the fires, there was a boy breathing flames from his mouth. White leathery wings sprouted from his back, almost too big for a human to bear, but too small for a full grown dragon's set, along with a white scaled tail trailing from this human figure. The human-dragon was no bigger than a teen, but blew flames at all the buildings, roaring with rage.
I quietly walked towards it, as it seemed to be destroying buildings in one direction, never looking back. But the more I approached, the more I saw a boyish silhouette than a fearsome dragon that could threaten a village. It seemed to stop breathing fire, but just roaring at the buildings in some sort of anguished pain.
I took from my bag my blowdart gun, which I used for hunting, and a strong tranquilizer dart. I couldn't bring myself to behead a kid that probably destroyed the village, for whatever reason I'm not too sure. He was closer to human than he was to dragon, despite his sin.
As I readied the tranquilizer, the human-dragon turned around slowly, and saw me. He roared at me too, and I jumped out of his way as he shot fire in my direction. Before he had the chance to redirect his flames, I shot the tranquilizer, hitting him in his chest.
ROOAAAR!
The human-dragon's fires seemed to be subdued once I shot him with the tranquilizer, and he roared as he fell to his knees. The roars got quieter, but the tranquilizer seemed to do the trick. He finally collapsed onto the ground, knocked out.
I walked over after he was out for a minute, sword ready to defend me. His wings and tail seemed to shrink and rescind into his body, and all was left was his old village clothes and snow white hair.
"Momma...papa..."
I scratched my head, wondering if the kingdom could understand that this boy could be the dragon they're looking for. My conscience weighed in on me, arguing that worst things could be done to the boy if I brought him to the kingdom. But I wasn't fit to raise a boy, especially one that could bury me in flames.
"Papa...no..."
I groaned. Whatever this boy's issue is, I'll ask when he wakes up. I picked him up, slumped him over my shoulder, and trudged out of the village.
The village was still flickering in flames as I took my leave. It was already night, and the warm orange hues from the burning buildings were the only thing that lit the night in the mountains.
---
At the end of the forest, there was a bright light. I instantly lit up. "Mister Silhen!!"
I ran to the end of the forest, and there was a valley of green grass in front of us. It smelled of fresh green air, and the grass even rippled in the soft breeze. "I can see the kingdom from here!!"
"Oi..." Mister Silhen came out of the forest with me. "Let's take a break, we're in no rush..."
"I want to see the kingdom now though!!" I turned to Mister Silhen and whined. "It would be my first time going!!"
"Kid, I'm hungry," he growled. "Just wait, the kingdom isn't all that. And keep that hood on."
I couldn't help but look up, the sky was so blue, and the clouds were so white, and the air was so much warmer than the mountain air I remember. I stretched out my arms and fell back in the soft grass. "Ahhh...this feels great. I bet the kingdom would be twice as awesome though."
"...The kingdom probably isn't a good idea..." I heard him softly mumble.
"What did you say, Mister Silhen?" I couldn't hear him.
"Er...nothing. Hey kid, come over here, eat something."
My stomach growled a bit. I didn't eat anything, did I? I can't really remember. "Say Mister Silhen, you were gonna tell me what happened to my village, right? Besides it getting destroyed, right?"
Mister Silhen shot me a glare, and threw me a loaf of bread. |
