I tried to buy a new mouth with AP and it won't let me unlock it even though I have enough AP :(

Hi, when attempting to buy the mouth, and after pressing the little satchel icon , did you explicitly click the Unlock with , option?
It, and the option to purchase with Diamonds would have been grayed out until you selected one as the way you'd be paying.
After clicking it, it should have lit up green to indicate that's the currency option you chose to purchase the mouth with. The also previously grayed-out Unlock button should light up green as well, which you'd then in turn press to purchase the mouth.
After that, the item should be unlocked for you to use.
I hope this explanation is possibly helpful in solving the issue you're facing. ^^
