(I just realized rien never put his coat back on before he went out again rip)

The rain hasn't even remotely abated by the time the two step out into the street--if anything, it's falling even heavier. Nonetheless, Noelle angles the wide brim of her hat upward and turns her face straight into the wind for a moment before striding off in the direction of the waterfront. "Make haste, Rien Lai. Time is short when a murder is afoot."

As the resident expert on time being short, Rien makes the executive decision to bite down on his impolite protest of "that isn't how time works", as well as the questions of "why are you already calling it a murder? and "why do you sound so eager?", and catches up easily within a few strides. "What is particularly strange about these deaths?"

"The cases were reopened," Noelle explains thoughtfully, "Because the evidence used to close them suddenly disappeared."

"I'm sorry?"

"They were determined to be deaths due to negligence, yes? By itself, that would simply be tragic, but what makes it strange is how the victims' remains all quietly disappeared the week after their cases were closed. Some spontaneous fires in funeral homes, I believe a coffin somehow fell into the river en route--anyway, according to the director, looking back on it, it seemed like...like..."

"...clockwork," Rien finishes, and then frowns. "Why would the director tell you this? Does it somehow pose a threat to one of us?"

"Ah, but they didn't tell me," Noelle taps one ear with a sly wink. "I suppose they just didn't bother to speak quietly, you see?"

Rien opens his mouth to respond, only to be cut off as the wind suddenly picks up, bringing with it a scattered sheaf of papers from the direction of a nearby apartment complex that catch briefly on the pavement before being blown into the street. "One moment, there's a--" Rien hurries a few feet out into the street to save the previously rolled-up stack of papers from being carried into the gutter. "Is this the daily newspaper?" He nods at the doorstep the papers had been kidnapped from. "I think it came from that apartment."

Noelle takes the stack from him, gingerly shaking the water off the paper to squint at the smudged text. "It seems that waterproof ink is beyond the press's budget. This is hardly even readable anymore."

Having left so early in the morning, Rien hasn't yet had the chance to read the paper, so he eyes it with interest. "...'Local Pigeon Revealed to Be a Were-Creature'?" he reads off the front page, the headline just large enough to still be legible. "The journalists haven't picked up on the deaths yet?" It's not uncommon for some poor soul's demise under mysterious circumstances to be in the news, but they at least almost always make the front page. Almost always, with the exception of several incidents within the last few months--

Noelle carefully peels the wet paper apart to skim the next few pages, and frowns. "Who subscribes to two newspapers at once?" Tossed in with the regular paper is a second newspaper, one with a less familiar title. "The Catbird Daily? Never heard of that one."

Rien suddenly stops walking.
"That's an underground publication. They've been banned from printing for four years, seven months, and twenty-two days, ever since that act passed by the government--then who ordered it?"

Noelle stops too and turns around, eyes suddenly glinting with interest. "Who indeed? Let's return this paper to them and find out, shall we? And ask them how exactly they gained access to it, and whether we can, too?"

Rien blinks. "But it doesn't really have any relevance--"

Noelle turns the paper to face him, tapping one finger against the headline. "Is it not relevant that this newspaper seems to have better priorities on what ought to be reported? Such as, perhaps, the discovery of the deaths from last night, whereas our lovely government-approved paper prefers to focus on were-pigeon intrigue?"

"It's unlikely they'll explain anything to us," Rien points out, as Noelle begins marching off in the direction of the earlier apartment.

"Don't worry about it!" Noelle calls over her shoulder with a smile that is ninety percent sly and ten percent too gleeful, considering the way she taps a finger against the holster of her pistol. "I'm sure they shall be happy to cooperate with our investigation."

Rien's next executive decision is to follow after, even if it's just for the sake of getting out of the wind for a moment.

...

Several moments later, Noelle raps on the door and clears her throat, as Rien stands off to the side, awkwardly brandishing the newspapers like a participation trophy. "Wet newspaper delivery service!"

(yk between these two and cici apparently being there i think the agency's average attention span is like 2 seconds)

(******)
(shoot i forgot what the twins were doing lol)

Newt shut the window in annoyance. "Who left that open? I really wanted to read that articleyour did on the were-pigeons," he complained as he returned to the kitchen table. He made to sit down, but Nic shoved him aside.

"Dry your hair. You're dripping water on the linoleum." he told him.

"I took a shower, of course I'm dripping water. Whatever. So, the cases."
'
Nic nodded nd started dragging his finger down the list in their shared notebook, listing them as Newt looked over his shoulder. Newt reached over to pull ap pen closer and make notes on a seperate piece of notepaper.

"Disappearing bodies...even Zena never set that many funeral homes on fires when she was at her worst," Nic commented. "Wonder what the families thought?"

Newt raised an eyebrow. "Zena never set any funeral homes on fire."

"You sure about that?"

They were interrupted by a knock at the door. When the call for "wet newspaper delivery service" came through, the twins exchanged looks and while Nic flipped pages over so it looked like they were writing and not holding notes on evidence around murders in broad light, Newt went to open the door.

"Can I help you? We have no papers due to be delivered today." he greeted as he eyed the duo outside his door.

Noelle raises an eyebrow at Rien, cocking her head as they wait for the door to open. "Seems these--ah, two, yes, there's two of them--have already heard about the latest funeral home arson trend. Think that newspaper's already caught onto it?"

"It's possible," Rien replies thoughtfully. "Both the agency and those types of newspapers often run in the same circles. I believe even the director has worked with the underground press on several occasions, or fed them some information when the official paper refused to print it. They're both investigating cases, at the end of the day." The door opens before Noelle can respond, and she steps in front of the secretary to address the man standing in the doorway.

"Is that so? I do believe these were sitting on your doorstep a moment before the wind carried them off," Noelle declares, nodding at Rien, who is still holding the stack out toward the twins. "It's unfortunate that they're quite wet now, but they should still be legible. The second one has your address on it and all."

"I don't recall there being an--mmph!" Rien's refutation breaks off with a stifled yelp as Noelle kicks him in the shin.

She leans in closer, sliding her foot between the doorframe and the door to prevent it from closing, and lowers her voice. "Anyways, it would be a shame to miss today's news. I hear it's quite exciting. And you really ought to stop holding your breath before you get lightheaded. What is it that you're so nervous about?"

(did i never mention that OC has fire powers? and she was basically a free range child?)

Nicote craned his neck over Newt's shoulder as his twin took the papers. He could feel Newt tense as the girl spoke- Newt probably heard something.

Not that it mattered, since clearly these two had seen the second paper. The one they probably weren't supposed to have.

Nic did his best to keep his face neutral, a task Newt was better at. "Really, now? It's rare that people pick up papers from the road, but I suppose we should thank you for bringing it to us?" He had a feeling Newt had picked up on something, and judging by the brother's reaction, these two surprise guests had quite the thoughts running through their minds.

His suspicions were confirmed when Newt opened his mouth. "A pity the news was smudged. As a journalist, it's quite vital to know what rival papers are publishing." he said evenly, his words less carefully chosen then what he probably should have said. "No matter how absolutely outlandish it seems. Here," He held the newspapers towards Nic, "put these aside, would you? Perhaps they'll still be readable if you hold them over the stove long enough."

Nic eyed him curiously, but backed away, as Newt returned his focus to their guests. Who definitely knew too much. He'd need to take care of that. Perhaps they had a truth-knowing ability of some kind..? Or some sort of knowledge ability...?

"I apologize. I would invite you in, but I'm sure you were probably on your way somewhere and our apartment is not very large in the first place, I'm afraid we've both been working all evening-never a time to rest when the news doesn't take a break," Newt told them. His inner thoughts were racing, having noticied the foot in the door and the slightly defensive position. Was this soime excuse to come barging in...? Perhaps some kind of investigation in to him and Nic? That wouldn't be good at all....

In the background, Nic had left the newspaper on the table, and in the process, managed to bring a few of the notes back to the bedroom where it was hopefully a bit safer then out in the open. Clearing things was always a good excuse, although he really hoped Newt wasn't abut to punch someone. That was Nicote's job, at least back in their school days. EIther way, if worse came to worse he'd teleport behind them and try to knock them out. They'd done that to guards on their trial before, it probaly was about time to find a new place anyways considering they'd been there in that apartment more then long enough with their father stiill roamming the city...

(So her and rien's unofficial little sis xuexue should never have a playdate, got it)

"Please don't worry about it," Rien chimes in hurriedly, waving his hands apologetically. "It really wasn't an inconvenience at all..." he trails off, uncertain what Noelle's plans are. It seems impolite to keep pressing them on the question, but...

Noelle fortunately takes over, seemingly refusing to back down regardless of courtesy. But as entertaining as it is, the two of them clearly aren't going to get any more cooperative the more threatening she seems, and it would be a pain to have to cover the secretary should things get too heated, so she decides upon a different approach. "Well then, since we've both got things to do and places to be, I suppose it's best I just cut to the chase so that all of us can get on with our lives as quickly as possible."

"We're from the Aperture Insight Detective Agency," she declares, smoothly sliding a business card from her pocket into the other man's hand. That in itself is not even a lie--she simply leaves out the fact that neither of them are actually investigators. Fortunately for his shins, Rien does not say anything.

"You may have already heard of it--we guarantee any case solved in under the half the time it takes the official authorities, minor crimes brought to light within ninety days or the price will be halved, as well as connections with skilled attorneys to resolve all loose ends. But of course," she sardonically tips her hat, "that's beside the point. You see, we have reason to believe that your newspaper could provide us a lead on a certain case of ours, and would like to get to know a little more about it. If you're in a hurry today, we can arrange for a later date to discuss these sources you have. You're free to decline, but you'll be compensated handsomely for your information, of course." In an effort to reduce the other two's nervousness, she adds, "And don't worry now, there's no need to look like that. We do have a policy of overlooking all other information unrelated to our case. We aren't affiliated with the government, after all."

She isn't really sure that an offer like this is normally proper protocol for an investigation, but she can deal with that later. And by 'deal with it', of course, she means that Rien will probably have to invent some new paperwork to make sure everything is in order, so she'll buy him some of his favourite tea to make up for it and for kicking him earlier.

Newt frowns at the card. "I...see."

Nicote, who's decided he's done all he can, returns to the door and squints. "Aperture Insight Department Agency. That's quite the mouthful," he comments. "You say non-government affiliated? That's quite rare in these parts."

Newt pretends to be in thought. He can vaguely make out some of the girl's thoughts- some names he doesn't know, but for the most part...

"Money is not what we're after," he states. "But it is a welcome incentive. You may enter, but we'll be requiring you keep us anonymous and I'll be holding you to that only-required information. Brother, clear the papers. Perhaps these...investigators....can assist us as well, considering it's highly likely our paths are intertwining."

"You need to stop reading philosophy books," Nicote tells him, but does as told. Newt gives the duo one more warning look before opening the door for them, motioning them to sit at the table Nicote's clearing away.

"And bring out some of the light teas. It's no good discussing matters of importance over an empty stomach," Newt adds. Food might be a good motivator, and people tend to lower their gaurds when partially distracted...he has a feeling he could use that somehow. Maybe. Nicote doesn't question the ideas, though he raises his eyebrow at the guy.

(I hath finally returned!!!! I think you know what I was busy doing lmao)

Noelle's smile widens a fraction as she waves a hand airily. "Well, you can just call us Aperture for short if you'd like, sir. We do find that going through the official government-endorsed channels tends to...complicate things. Slow them down, or halt them completely. You're familiar, I'm sure. As for anonymity, well, Rien--?"

The secretary perks up instantly at the mention of tea, lack of coat and his aching shin be damned. He pulls out a chair for Noelle, and then himself. "Hm? Oh, of course, it goes with all of our sources. That and information being on a need-to-know basis--it's standard practice, really." He pauses for a moment, then sighs and produces an unmarked envelope, which he holds out to the twins. "I assure it on my word, but an indemnity is standard practice, too."

Noelle shakes out her hat and hangs it atop the coat stand before sitting. "Well, there you have it. Our director is quite strict about it, and our secretary is very meticulous about confidentiality--comes with our trade. If you've never heard of one of our sources being leaked, you're not about to see it happen anytime soon." Not exactly flawless logic, but she barrels on nonetheless.

"We do have a few requests of our own, of course. We will be expecting you to keep certain case developments confidential, at least for a period of time, and that we agree upon what is released. Can't have our entire investigation process being piped directly to the press, you understand." She leans forward across the table, hand extended in an offering. "So, do we have a deal here?"

Newt is studying them both, deep in bhrough as they speak. He can hear them better now they're inside, or at elast their thoughts.

Noelle, Rien, no last names but that's normal Un fortunate but shouldn't be too much of a problem...but do they murder directors? Murdereed a director? Director asked them to murder? Father is technically a director, but I dobut he works were them, he loves to flaunt his political status but then again-

"Oi. Rabitboy, wakeup," Nicote pokes him in the side, making Newt startle.

"Huh?"

Nicote sighs heavily. "I apologize for my brother," he says to the duo. "He is...rather featherbrained--"
"Hey"
"--and tends to drift in thought. Now," he directs at Newt, "are teh terms acceptable to you? elder brother?"

THey know Nic is only saying this is a curtesy. Newt would probably just do what Nic tells him to unless he thought otherwise and he has no reason to.

"Deal," he agrees and reaches to shake the hand offered.

Even if they work for their father, people can be bribed and it was high time they moved anyways. At best, they get to do something about their biggest problem in life. Win-win to him.
