Technically what team does best depends on the player themself and the way they fight
If you throw some people into the lost grove, their first pick of tank will be shadow.
If you threw me in there with a shadow I would panic because shadow tanks confuse me and the last time I bothered trying to use one I kept getting thoroughly mauled by ents (not the least because I am used to earth tank strategies, which made it way easier for me to adapt to using a water tank than shadow.)
(I found it so hard to use a shadow tank that to rank up my shadow pet I ended up using her as an attacker on an in-training water/light/shadow team. Fights took ages but hey, I wasn't constantly almost-dying or needing to use healing items like I did when she was tank)
My own personal preference is earth/light/air, and secondarily water/light/fire
You absolutely want a light healer on your LG party, that's a given for most people
Fire or Air, it depends more on what style of damage you prefer- take out multi-enemy mobs a bit faster, or bosses a lot faster?
Tanks, I have always found, are the most personal setups?
So I'm just going to link the three teams / nine pets that I have max rank
Earth (non-max) / Light (non-max) / Air (non-max)
Main team, very sturdy, can easily grind without paying attention, can take out Nightfall Captains in five turns. Earth is my primary tank preference, very useful because base attack can Taunt enemies and thorncoat means that those taunted enemies damage themselves. Thorncoat also blocks ent's smash attack completely (and taunt means you know who it's aiming for), and taunt+thorncoat also means Captains that hit 100 mana have to aim at the earth pet and it nullifies all their Vanish-induced criticals.
(My earth tank is tough enough that combing sneering howl and thorncoat lets her survive the crystalline golem elites' shard debuff combo without aid, and that debuff combo KO's pretty much anything else)
Air pets get decimate and hehe, decimate Fun, mass damage, obliterate enemies, tasty tasty 100k+ damage critical hits.
Water (max) / Light (max) / Fire (max)
Secondary team, also sturdy. Occasionally use the fire pet with main team's light and air to make a light/fire/air team for two of the cave bosses.
Water cannot taunt, but it can shield the whole team, which can be very handy. It can also nullify elites' and bosses special attacks like Earth can. It can also hit all enemies at once, and buff the party doing so. Fun to use.
Water (non-max) / Light (max) / Shadow (max)
As I said, when it came to trying to use shadow as a tank, I just gave up after a while (I was originally training her as tank of the secondary team, with her siblings), so I just ended up with this team.
Water tank has different profs from secondary team because his lower stats meant I had to try something different to get him working properly for me. Amusing to use "shadow attacker taunts, water tank shields shadow", at the least, but like. not a team that's going to be setting records for fast battles.
Shadow cannot nullify or block special attacks like earth and water, it can only use block on the exact turn when they use the attack and hope for the best.
So basically, just. Work out which tank style you like best? Play with profs to see what works for you?

Im the opposite of Scathreoite, at least in terms of my preferred tank. I havent, for the life of me, been able to figure out how to use an Earth tank correctly, but have a pretty good handle on using a Shadow one. I prefer a Shadow pet as a tank because at max level, they have two abilities that do partial healing. Anyway, here are my two preferred teams for the Lost Grove.
Team 1
Phaeddon (Shadow Tank)

Level: 70
Proficiency Points: 2 Health, 1 Intelligence, 2 Agility
Team 2
Both my tank & healer are the same (see above), but my cannon is an Air pet rather than a Fire pet.

Thank you so much! What about using water for tank? Is that effective?
