That's a good question; for me, it's the characters! Sometimes I get the story ideas first, but I love character creation. I'm old fashioned, so I keep most of my writing and my notes in a journal. Most of it gets put in a digital notepad for safe keeping too, I just love the feeling of pen on paper. The way I keep track of all my notes doesn't make it hard for me to organize all the story assets. It's just a big 'ol puzzle putting them all together to make one, coherent story for me.

Usually I start with he story idea and then make the world and characters as I go along. I keep everything I google docs (I have a link to my current writing if you want to see how I layot my stuff).

I already had he ocs foe the one I'm doing so I jsut made a world to fit them and a story out of that.

@Primarina
I keep some notes in a journal - never actual writing though because my brain goes faster than my hands lol.
And this is kinda weird, but it was bugging me all day - your username popped up in a dream I had last night. (after some quick googling, I now see it is the name of a pokemon. Noice) It was really strange because I woke up and was like, 'huh. Cool name.' And wrote it down in said journal. Never seen it before, super weird... O.o I think it was like Primarina Caverns or something? But anyways I saw your message and immediately got some weird deja vu. Do you get coherent dreams or do they not make sense?

@Orca
Yeah, I generally have story ideas before concrete things like characters and worlds. I use google docs as well! Though none of my layout goes in there. It's strange, but I can't plot out my stories before I write them...

@Hiraeth
I get both coherent dreams AND totally incoherent dreams. Both make excellent notes for future writing projects, I say. 'Primarina' is a really pretty word and it's also totally my favorite pokemon, that's why I picked it out in the first place. Maybe you've seen it once before and didn't remember? Subconscious seems to love to latch onto things like that.
Dreams in general are a favorite topic of mine, sometimes I get deja vu from stuff I've experienced in dreams when I'm awake. Some really strange stuff can invoke that feeling, I've even had stuff that wasn't relevant at all bring that deja vu feeling back. I get super vivid dreams, I like to think it's a major inspiration for my writing. Some have told me that vivid dreams are connected to creativity... though I've never really thought about if it was true or not.

Oh my gosh I have a mad crazy deja vu story! I swear on God himself that this is true - happened two years ago and still get chills thinking about it. I keep a dream journal. This dream happened in February 2018 - in the dream I was on the track team, and being taught how to throw a javelin by a very distinctive man. The boys' team was shovelling snow of the track - that's why it stuck with me, weird to shovel snow during a spring sport. Anyhow, fast forward a few months, and this very thing happens. I literally like shut down for a moment it was so weird. Like I've never really been a paranormal-head, but this, man... this was something weird. The subconscious is amazing.

I finally did for mine......
Thoguh technically this is the second book I wrote. My first "book" was a kiencraft fanfic that somehow got to 60 pages...?

Yah that was crazy
Plus way too crazy due to me using my terrible looking base in minecraft as the setting
Oh wel it worked sort of

Oh I adore weird stuff like that. I can only imagine how bizarre that felt! I've had plenty of stuff that I felt I saw in a dream first happen in reality. Usually super mundane things, but it's still really fascinating. Dreams can sometimes feel like a premonition, even if they can't actually be. In a way, I wish I understood my own subconscious more. A lot of the dreams I have are kind of like a window into them.
And of course for me that means they're also a window into free inspiration, even the "boring" ones often have some unusual element. Some of the reoccurring themes in my dreams have become a reoccurring them in my creative works.

Pfft. Minecraft is the best - as an architect enthusiast, I love making things you otherwise couldn't in real life. We've all written a minecraft fanfic at some point. xD
