Faline

Sunlight filtered through the forest leave, dappling among the bracken and burrows where the eggs laid hidden. The trees were silent and still with no breeze to rustle the foliage. The only sound to be heard was the babbling of the Old and Grungy river gently flowing. A single Doe splayed protectively over the eggs, tense and aware of danger nearby. A single bird-call broke the dense tension and the woods of Unami came back to life and the doe relaxed and listened to the sounds of movement coming from within the eggs. Some were showing the beginnings of cracks forming on their surface, their occupants eager to greet the outside world. The doe nudge a pink speckled egg closer to her. Disquieting uncertainty set in as the inactivity of the eggling worried her. This egg, her egg, barely made a sound the entirety of its brooding. The does ears flickered to the sound of an intruder. She stiffened, prepared to give flight before she recognized the sounds of her companions returning from foraging. She arose, stretching her legs before getting the other mothers. With one last loving look at her egg she bounded off to find herself some newly ripened fruit.

Many days later the nest was mostly empty as the new hatchlings had gone out with their mothers to learn the ways of the forest. The doe anxiously nudged her eggs again. Some movement had been heard the last few days but she still worried at the placidity of her eggling. Fine cracks had begun to appear along the shell but the lack of activity spoke of weakness. Little by little the shell broke away as a brown little hatchling fawn struggled its way out of confinement. The doe pawed at the egg, trying desperately to free her little one until finally the fawn was free of her shell. She lay there panting in to sunlight. Pink spots dappled the brown coat, matching perfectly with the spring flowers. Hints of yellow here and there suggested the development of markings later in life. The doe nuzzled and cleaned her newly hatched fawn, making comforting noises and helping her baby stand. Later she would take her child to Seldom Seen to forage the fruit their but for now the fawn must learn to nurse from her mother.
