It's totally okay!
The easiest way to ping someone is to hit the blue @ on the bottom right of one of their posts, after you click it, it'll open up the forum message box, and their username will already be in the Ping Users bar. ^^

To make a link clickable by the way, after you paste it into the forum message box, highlight the link, then click the blue URL button that's above the message box, it'll make the link you post clickable by adding URL brackets around your links. Each link should be done individually, not with the same set of brackets.

Excluding the periods in the bracket sets(I have to use those to keep the link clickable), the it would look like this(Brackets in bold for clarity):
[url.]https://www.sylestia.com/view/pets/?petid=8241436[/url.]

If you do this correctly(Don't include the periods I used in the example), you'll have clickable links, like these:
