The Black Mermaid
Deep below the waves was once born a mermaid. While black hair was uncommon, her black fin was considered an omen of ill fate. For all her life, she was shunned. This led her to avoiding other sea-dwellers and often well beyond the underwater settlements, into places both exciting and extremely unsafe. But even then, even the dangers of the deep avoided her as though she bore some plague.
It was not until one day, tired of all, she swam to the surface. While fully aware of the danger, she disregarded it. She was so tired of those below, she wished an end. But she she drew near a distant shore, she saw something strange. Drawing nearer, she found a vaguely oceanic creature of a sort she had never seen before. While usually, she would avoid all on principle by now, the creature intrigued her and swam closer. Now near the shore, she saw its body was stained red.
Suddenly and inexplicably seized with fear, the pulled herself onto the sand far enough to reach the creature and began tending its wounds. Within a few hours, the creature woke, his injuries on the mend. Looking around, he saw the black mermaid coiled around his back. Realizing this stranger had saved him, he coiled up with her and slept. Shortly after, the pair woke. Seeing the creature awake, the mermaid made to leave, but he leapt in front of her and shook his head.
"No. You are my friend."

Calypso
Goddess of the sea creatures. When Calypso was a child, she spent most of her days at the beach, playing in the sand and rescuing sea creatures that washed up on the beach or found themselves stranded in tide pools. One day, a large rogue wave swept her out to sea. Her family searched for her for weeks, but Calypso was never to be found. Her lifeless body was found by the sea creatures she had previously saved, and carried to the Sea King Triton. The creatures pleaded to Triton to help her, because she was their savior when they needed help. It was then, King Triton resuscitated her and gave her powers. She could now breathe underwater, call out to the sea creatures and save her underwater friends again. Calypso now spends her days rescuing lost souls, swept up by rogue waves, saving sea creatures and placing curses on those who try to harm underwater life.

Beneath the lapping waves of the great Atlantic Ocean, something stirs. Zephyrs tangle the soft pale-blue hair of a girl who has just arisen from the depths of the water. Where has she come from and what is her purpose? She seems to talk to the life of the sea. Fish and seabirds of many kinds surround her, seeming to ask her questions. Who are you? they say.
