Lumina, Light of the Abyss

Far away in a distant ocean there lived a herd of Kelpari. Their home was hidden within a great forest of kelp that both protected them from predators of the neighboring abyss, and allowed them to ambush wandering prey of their own. They were masters of camouflage, able to blend in to their surroundings with absolute perfection at a single moment's notice, and the herd was very proud of their natural talents. But one day, the unthinkable happened. An egg hatched to reveal a brilliant light, and Lumina was born. Unlike the other Kelpari who could blend in with their surroundings, Lumina stood out, her bright runes and glowing fins revealing not only Lumina herself, but all the other Kelpari around her. She scared away all of the food, she ruined the other hatchlings' games of hide-and-seek, and worst of all, her existence alone threatened to lure in the beasts from the deep. Lumina was shunned, and as the herd's worries grew she was ultimately exiled to the densest, darkest part of the forest...

Despite her solitude Lumina remained stayed positive, and rather than letting the darkness take away her light she brought light into the darkness. Unlike the other Kelpari who avoided the thick tangles of kelp, Lumina was able to explore them, finding her own sources of food and making a nest of her own to live in. Lumina settled into her new home with ease, and even as she grew older she was happy. For a long time, she was alone; Lumina believed that the herd had forgotten about her entirely, but she couldn't have been more wrong. The fastest and strongest Kelpari, the leader of the herd himself, came rushing through the kelp forest in search of Lumina, and with him came terrible news. One of the new hatchlings - his own daughter - had wandered into the Abyss and hadn't been seen since. The herd had tried to find her but with nothing to show for it; the abyss was far too dark to navigate. The herd leader apologized for their cruelty in exiling Lumina, and he begged for her aid in finding his daughter. Lumina forgave him with a smile, and promised to do her best in finding his child.

With Lumina taking the lead, she and the bravest Kelpari of the herd traveled far into the Abyss. Without her light they would surely have been lost themselves, but Lumina's brilliance far outmatched the terrifying darkness of the Abyss, and after days of searching they found the little lost hatchling hiding in a cave. The hatchling was immediately drawn to the light, and as she swam to Lumina's side, Lumina softly whispered, "It's okay little one. As long as you stay by me, I will keep away the darkness." Lumina led the Kelpari back home safely, and without a word she made her way to the depths of the kelp forest. But just as the last of her light was flickering out of view, a voice called out to her, "Lumina! Wait!" Lumina halted, and the little hatchling swam to her side. Her father followed shortly after, and with concision he invited Lumina to stay. Lumina was delighted to hear the offer, but politely she declined. "I'm happy with the home I have," she answered brightly, "But know that if you ever have need for me again, all you have to do is follow the light."

Oidhche

Oidhche was once the friend and ally of Entia, a woman with great command over the darkness, as the two had much in common. Their coloring, for one, as Entia's chocolate skin, green eyes, and violet and blue hair rendered her a shadow in the darkness. But also, their understanding of the darkness that so called to them.

The darkness was never meant to be frightening. It was their ally, to hide them, to protect them, to shelter them... Until Entia dallied too deeply. Her magic turned against her, warping her mind, and Oidhche's friend was lost to madness...

Oidhche's golden eyes, and the light from her horn, are her own personal lantern. For while she does not fear the dark time of day she was named after, and would gladly walk the night without the light her horn casts, she hopes that it will, in fact, draw Entia out of the eternal darkness her friend has been lost to.

She opened her eyes. Rindali. That was her name. Darkeness. She once had parents. she had to, but she did not remember them. She was alone. She had always been alone. Shapes in the darkness reached out to her at times, but she shied away, diving deeper and deeper, far from the sun's reach.
Flashes of cream in darkness, lit by the glow-eyes of glow-fish. She danced with the shadows, ignoring the emptiness both inside and out. It couldn't touch her. Nothing could. Invisible.
There was no more down. Something blocked her every time she tried. Something pushed her forwards, away from her sheltered place. Frantic, she swam faster, hoping to outrun it. Her heartbeat grew louder and louder. Boom. She swam, unseeing, desperate to get away. The water around felt lighter. Noises swelled and faded. And suddenly there was no more water. Nothingness. It terrified and invigorated. It ached and euphoriated. Warmth. The emptiness was filled. Rindali opened her eyes, for the first time. Light.

Mercy

"Abandon ship!" I heard my captain shout to his crew.

I look around in a panic and see a pod of angry Kelpari boarding the ship, the ship rocks back and forth violently as heavy thuds land on the sides. Then suddenly, somehow, the entire ship flips over, saltwater rushes over me. I struggle to swim back up, but the sucking force of the sinking ship was greater, my lungs scream for air... I see something rush up to me before everything goes black.

I wake up with a headache in a dark room. I groan and the sound echos, I must be in a cave I thought to myself. I notice a dim, yellow light nest to me and directly under it, a Kelpari mare. I gasp, startled by it, but then I realized she wasn't hostile. "Did... did you save me?" I ask. She nods. I gratefully smile, "Thank you...", I pause to try to come up with something to call her, "Mercy."

Concinnus
(Con-chin-us)
A form of saying "elegant" in Latin.

Concinnus was born into a high family that was considered royal.
She was expected to act professional and snobby like her parents.
But as she grew up she wanted to be more adventurous.
As she traveled from place to place with her parents she couldn't
help but get distracted by all of the beautiful fish and underwater plants.
She wanted to see more. As soon as she grew old enough she left.

She began to discover so many new creatures that she had never seen before.
She enjoyed her life this way. Always finding new things and seeing new sights.
It was what she had always dreamed of doing.
It was what she was meant to do.

Kaya the Night Maiden

Kaya was a young female Kelpari who loved swimming as much as the next aquatic Sylesti, day in and day out. One day, she met a creature who came down from the night sky. The two would play, eat, and share many adventures together during the night. However, right before dawn fell, the mysterious creature would always return to the night sky.

Over time, the two fell in love with each other. Kaya was overjoyed that she had finally found her soul mate. The unknown creature, who revealed his name to be Orion, was very happy, but there always seemed to be a hint of sadness in his eyes. Kaya questioned Orion about this one day, and he revealed that his race was not allowed to mate outside of its own kind. Orion apologized for not saying anything earlier, as he too had fallen for her and wanted their remaining nights together to be happy ones.

On the final night, Kaya and Orion did as much together as they possibly could. Kaya noticed that Orion wore a different expression in his eyes. It was not of sadness, but of determination instead. Right before they parted for the final time, Orion gave Kaya a kiss on the forehead. From there, spread beautiful markings all over her body matching the night sky the two so loved, and it seemed as if the stars themselves floated around Kaya. Orion said, "This is my promise to you, Kaya. I have given you a piece of my soul. One day I will find a way for us to be together." And with that, Orion disappeared into the night sky. To this day, Kaya the Night Maiden waits for her true love to return.
