What exactly does testing a pet's genes "do"?

Admittedly I have only been here a week... and even though I have a lot, a lot, a lot of pets lol, I haven't a clue what some of these items around here do, and what it would mean for me or my pets...

@diablo, if your pets have carried/hidden genes, testing them would show what it/they are, also if you have a hatchling, you can test it to see what is shows/carries as well
