Yo me again and I'll fight you, Orca
I'm not always online, cut me slack. I have responsibilities (sometimes, anyways)

"replies'll be sporadic. Going to be at a party for my brother in law's 21st birthday tonight"

On a post I sent to you too, next time I'll just send a mass ping in ooc ffs

@Larkien, I'm too tired right now to get another recap typed, so I'll just link the one I did here.

Lul
Here's hoping, my own 21st was a depressing trainwreck but at least I got to go to a casino so that was cool

No chance I won't be mildly intoxicated during this, this side of the family loves to drink and I know how 21sts go for people :^)

If my posts turn into a mess, that's to blame. Got plenty of time sitting around but I don't want to be on my phone the whole time, so lemme get to your post before I legit forget now nn

I'm sort of back to the beginning again too, trying to relearn what I picked up from living there for a bit (though I still have a lot of vocabulary down still) and get a better handle on sentence structure. I can do basic, limited small talk and know differences in dialect and etiquette, but that's about it. @_@
I'm extremely bad with speaking it because the sentence structure trips me up so much. I just can't get my head around everything being essentially backward.
What are you using to learn Japanese?

Also one of the confusing things esp is that addresses are written very, very different and stupidly complex.

It's also backwards, like the zip code is first followed by prefecture, city, district + district code, block and building number.

Like trying to memorize my own was such a pain that I had to just keep a card with me with it.

ugh forgot this thread existed. pffff
Anyway, I'm using Duolingo atm. that is not the only thing I have been using though. I found several websites that allow me to speak it on one end of a recorded conversation. I have 2 native speaking friends who are helping me as well. Again, not too far along, but I have all the help I need to really get going.

My aunt is a veteran and was deployed there for quiet some time. She fell in love with the culture but has long since forgotten her Hiragana. She wanted to learn with me but ended up loosing interest due to a quickly filling schedule. I really wanted to take it in high school, but it was an online curriculum that didn't work too well for most students.

I did latin (ancient roman) instead since I had covered the basics in grade school. I am fluent in it and am the proud achiever of 'Maxima cum laude' national Latin award for grade level ten. As much as I wish I could have taken Japanese then, That second highest in nation award looks amazing on paper. Not to mention the metal was sooo shiny lol

I wish I had more native friends tbh, it's definitely very helpful to actually have people to speak with. I have one but he hasn't lived in Japan since he was young and it doesn't end up helping me very much when what he knows is pretty limited too.
Most practice I get is trying to read memes on the Japanese side of Twitter. XD

I've always liked Japanese culture since my great grandmother used to be an English teacher in Japan back when my great grandfather was stationed there.

I surprisingly never got a chance to learn any foreign language at all since my schools were extremely underfunded (even Spanish, though I know enough of that to get by, lol
Thanks, Dora)
I'm also extremely behind on math but we don't talk about that

Go figure the first chance I try to learn both Chinese (for kanji reading, since a lot are shared) and Japanese on my own.
I plan to try to take college courses in them if I can find them since the memorization of both languages is pretty steep.
I've heard Duolingo isn't exactly the best for it because of syntax weirdness, but I don't know if I can personally verify it.

When I was stationed over there, I got some pretty informal lessons from a Japanese teacher who was teaching on the base but I probably spent a lot more time trying to learn from this site and the Genki books.

I might try to give Duolingo a shot to motivate myself to pick it back up again and try to supplement it again with other sources.

That's the primary reason I use duolingo, because it is fairly motivational for a linguistics app. I have enjoyed it thus far, and from what I can tell, it works pretty well. Would recommend.
