i love that idea! mandarin fish are so bright and colorful it will be perfect. bettafish aren't saltwater fish but i don't think that will be a problem since mer can switch from salt water to fresh water with ease. thank you for your contributions! also, i got just got your submissions to the design contest and they look awesome ^^

I just finished your story, and I like it so far! However, the words which are crossed out are rather easy to read. If you want to keep the words hidden, you might want to remove the words entirely and replace it with either ___ or ----. I'm also willing to help edit it if you want!

Frostyfear? I like it, no objections from me if you use it as a nickname :)
Crustacean monsters are definitely something to consider. It would be cool, definitely! I'm thinking large, chattering shrimp with razor sharp mandibles and armhair.
Speaking of cool ocean creatures, have you heard of the Black Dragonfish? They can detect red light, AND they're pretty!!! And yeah, nature creates things like nothing else. Yeti crabs are a cool example

Oh boy, that's such a fun idea to work with!
A few suggestions:
Octopus/squid,
eel/sea snake,
starfish,
frogfish,
crayfish/shrimp/lobster,
dragonfish,
thresher shark,
lionfish,
And wow, humans are so creative with the names of ocean animals

i love the lionfish and eel idea! the dragon fish seems kinda terrifying...like something that would lurk in the deep...and have a cool name...and make a good antagonist. i love it!

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm aware of glass frogs, but I figured since it doesn't really have any natural predators/has much more epic means of avoiding capture, anyways... yeah xD I did actually think about the silver bits serving something like that purpose (but mostly for showiness because... because), but the fish fin part is new and sounds cool O.O
It only exists in one ocean and in pretty specific parts of it, lol, but there probably is some variation? Not a whole lot, though-- those specific parts of the ocean only have so many discrepancies between them.
I am, in fact, diving into markets. A lot xD
It's technically illegal to hunt them (nice job, protagonist, nice job) because they're so rare/numbers are actually unknown and they need to be studied more/things with spirit plane alignments require a license, but no one thinks that, ya know, it could actually be caught in the first place.
Nice job, protagonist, nice job (with less sarcasm).
However, interest in it would probably primarily lie mostly in its horns! And probably for some magical reason, too, though probably no one knows what its actual properties are yet. But anything spirit-plane related is really powerful. Not to mention the horns are showy, lol.
(The magic system in this series basically works by crafting natural objects with extremely chaotic magical properties with others in a way that combines them to reach the desired effect/makes them controllable. It requires creativity and ability to think outside the box on the crafter's behalf :D)
Yep. Goblin sharks. 'Nuff said.

what would you think of a weekly prompt to help with world building/ writing? i don't think it would be a contest - i already have contests set up though not on a weekly basis - but i think it would be productive and help get your mind working and start conversations.
it would be nice to have something to start up conversation and help people work out their own worlds and writing. i'd like to have your opinions on the matter, though. i'm thinking about prompts such as "what is the main religion of this world" and "what diseases are most prominent in the setting of your story" - things that well help build the world and flesh it out.
of course, participation will be completely optional, and you will not be required to post the answer on this thread. these prompts are to help in writing and making notes, they aren't for me. so, what are your thoughts?
