This is an interesting thought, and I have to admit I have been thinking something similar about how common the supposedly rare pets are going to get with unlimited breeding...

I don't particularly like the tone though, of making it seem somehow better to release pets just because they are "common". Some of the pets like the ryori in many ways I like better as the plain species. If I get a good color combo, even with no carries, I'll keep them so long as I have room for them.

But realistically, I don't think this is going to change the economy much. The root of the problem, the ability to breed unlimited numbers of pets, is still there. Even saying that each pet can only breed a handful of times (which, btw, I abhor! If I work hard enough to get a breeding pair of 6 vis whatevers, common species or not, I want the ability to breed them, period. I don't think retiring their breeding ability is going to help anyway, I'll just keep their babies going and keep breeding more an more.) What you WILL be doing is limiting the number of decent, cheap pets for new users who don't have gold to be buying expensive pets, and don't know any more than "oh, that's a pretty one!"

A more reliable, if more frustrating way to control the rarity issue in game is to make it so that each breeding attempt does not necessarily give you an egg each time. Other breeding games do it this way, with variable success rates for each species. For example, common pets might give you an egg 3 out of four times, uncommon species give you a 50/50 chance of an egg, while rare species might only give you an egg one out of ten times, if that. This is a much more reliable way to limit the numbers of each species, though it is still possible for mass breeders to fill stables with rare pets and flood the market with lots of babies. And no need to mess with the cool down periods this way either.

People being people, if it's rare and has a higher value, some people will do whatever it takes just to get the higher valued pets. The more you try and limit them to make these species rare, the more that kind of person is going to hoard those "rarer" pets to make them as common as grass, at least for them personally.

And no, I'm not interested in becoming one of your soldiers. I would never buy a pet for the sole purpose of releasing it. And i find it hard to release pets, whether I bred them or worse, bought them (either directly or with traps). Just thought I would add my two cents, for whatever it is worth, about the rarity/breeding issue.

I might add... another way to keep at least the festival species rarer, is to limit breeding only to the time of the festival in which they were released. The Griffi, for instance, says in its description that it is only found during the Winter Festival while it comes down to its breeding grounds. So, make that part of the lore for that species, and make it only breedable during the Winter Festival. Same for the Ryori, only make it breedable during the Fall Festival, etc. I can hear the breeders of these species screaming now (grin) but at least it would keep these harder to find. And people would adjust, some even having a specific game plan in place to breed like crazy, and what pairs to breed and what to look for in offspring, etc.

For the real life economy of the game though, the essences need to be available for diamonds. I like this game. I want the owners to have enough income through the game to keep it alive. If this is one of the things people are actually buying, it would be foolish to make an issue of an important part of the revenue stream that keeps the site healthy and open.

I kinda like that idea. I used to be pretty active on the Dragon Cave website and that's what they would do with their holiday dragons. There was only a certain window each year where holiday dragons could be bred. The rest of the year you could still breed with them but they would only produce non-holiday dragons. Though that wouldn't really work on this site cause you can't cross breed pets like you can on Dragon Cave... One down side to this would be that fabled festival pets would then just be sitting there for most of the year literally eating gold, assuming people keep their pets fed. But then that might deter people from hoarding festival pets and it may disperse them more evenly throughout the site. They also did this more this time around but they made festival pets appear less often, mostly with the Arctic Storm Griffi. So there aren't nearly as many of them as there are Spooky and Blood Scream Ryoris. As much as people would complain about it, myself included, it would be a good way to limit the number of fabled festival pets that's for sure. That's just my opinion. :P

You two have introduced a very wonderful idea! Perhaps, if the three of us work together, we can work on this idea then al three of us send the same message to krin or fai. Of course, as I said this idea would have to be given a "fine tuning". Tinker around with some parts of it, remove other parts so that it can function better.

"lol I think I keep using terms a mechanic/inventor/tinkerer would use..."

message me if you want to continue working on this idea.
