Catch & release is a place to post pets that don't meet the trait requirement from the Mermaid caller/Princess Annika's list.
An example of a failure would be getting Flowered Vines on a RH Luff, rather than Wyvern Wings.
Failures would also include pets that have the right trait, but has already been claimed by another player.

Unfortunately all of the pets from the mermaid caller has been claimed, the original post has yet to be updated, but will be sometime after the 8th.
