Lake Water Kelpari

SPOILERS FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T GOTTEN TO ENIGMATIC GROTTO YET!
There came a time when the people of Esior's Haven felt upset. They had been receiving numerous floods daily, and it was washing away their crops. So, in their time of need, they took the long journey to the Enigmatic Grotto to see Casius, who told them, "You must pick the 4 shiniest mushrooms from Fungus Grove, the darkest vines from Trollsblight Caverns, and the prettiest flowers from outside your town. When you have gathered them, through them into your water source that runs through your area."

The people of Esior's Haven did as they were told, and they tossed the ingredients one by one into the river. Somehow, the strange ingredients merged, spinning together like a web, into...something. It was the prettiest Sylesti they had ever seen, and it spoke to them, telling that she was the Lake Water Kelpari, and she meant no harm. She was able to control the weather. As it turned out, she already existed. They had just summoned her, in sylesti form.

They were overjoyed to hear that she would regulate her floods. Today, if you're lucky, you can see her gliding over the water ways of Viridian Meadows, a free spirit, and the gentlest of creatures.

NOTE: Saying she's Lake Water is inaccurate. Technically, she controls a series of streams and rivers. Lake Water sounds better, though.

Nymphal, Butterfly of the Lake

Once upon a time there lived a little Butterfly by the lake. Every day this butterfly fluttered about the waters edge watching the Sylvorpa dance about in the water. The butterfly looked on at these beautiful water creatures jealous that they could play in the water while she could not. One day the butterfly was fluttering about dancing between the splashing Vorpa when a droplet landed on her wing. The poor creature, unable to fly with wet wings, fell to the water with a "Plop!".

The Vorpa's stopped their play fighting to help the little bug get to the dry shore. But as they crowded around her, she knew that her time dancing through the air while the vorpa's splashed about the water was almost spent. Before she took her last breath she wished to the Great Goddess, 'if only I had been able to dance in the water like the Vorpa do'.

Now it is not very often that the Great Goddess intervenes in mortal affairs, but she had watched the wee butterfly for many moons and had grown fond of the wee thing. In her great divinity she decided to grant the creatures wish. Summoning the spirit of the Water, the Great Goddess surrounded to butterfly with Mystic waters and began her metamorphosis from a small bug to a beautiful water horse. As the Butterfly awoke with a start she realised that there was something different about her surroundings, especially the fact that her Sylvorpa friends were now much smaller than her. Fluttering her wings she realised something else, her body was much larger than it had once been and her wings that once soared her through the air were now only able to hover and glide for a short period before she landed back in the water. But the water did not hurt her like it once did. The no longer Butterfly jumped up and down dancing in the water with joy, she could now play like she had always wanted to.

Renegade In The Ice

I created this destiny. I was the one who vowed to never leave these waters, and fight for my own rights. Look where it got me. Enwrapped in my prison of ice, they say it's what's best for a Kelpari like me.

She ran her fingers over the ancient words, etched as a warning to those entering these caves. To her, they were bittersweet. Looking up at the shard of ice looming above her, she wondered if the legend could be true. They say that there were Kelparis that lived here, and when the water froze, they froze too. People say the Kelparis "born" from this ice couldn't be tamed. People say they don't belong in this world. She took a deep breath, cautiously reaching for the amulet she had tucked away into her pocket.Taking a deep breath, she spoke the words engraved on the surface. The ice chamber began to melt and a figure began to stir deep within. It wouldn't long before a Kelpari of legend was revealed to her. His distrustful eyes darted about the icy cavern, before they settled onto her...

I know it's all over the place and rushed, but I'm not exactly the best at writing down my ideas. I tried to convey what I pictured this Kelpari to be like. I liked the blue color scheme and I could easily picture him as something that would be encased in ice. A prideful Kelpari that demands respect and trust, nothing more, nothing less. Only then will he be loyal.

Perditus Opes

Long ago there was a greedy, mysterious pirate on the Sylestian seas. He was seeking the sacred treasure of Golden Tides, which he planned to take for himself and become the richest man on lands and waters. This treasure was the prized possession of one of the mythical sea guardians, however, who disapproved of the greedy desires this pirate held.

When the pirate finally made it to the treasured sea cave where this prize lay, his eyes did not pause to roam the glorious sight as he began scooping gold and pearls into his pockets and beer bottles. However, the sea guardian emerged out of thick fog and swung his tail about him, chanting a long lost spell.

At that moment, Opes was born. The treasure was sucked from every corner of the room and molded into a gorgeous kelpari that hovered beside the sea guardian majestically. She was nmed Perditus Opes, meaning "lost treasure." Opes was blessed with eternal life by the sea guardian, and was released into the wide Sylestian seas. She wasn't seen again until years later when the wandering adventurer was fighting stormy waves...

Water Lily Kelpari aka "Lily"

Lily is a prime example of her species. Quiet and timid, she is rarely seen fully out of her pond, choosing to 'beach' herself along the edges to watch the wind blow though the trees or the clouds float thought he sky. If approached, she quickly submerges, hiding under one of the many patches of water lilies that encircle her pond. Even submerged, she is easy to spot, as the flowers on the water lilies she hides under will spontaneously bloom, as though attempting to aid in her camouflage.

Considering her normal hiding spot, she has wrapped herself in the petals of the water lilies that fall off as they die, and even their pollen has managed to create a permanent speckled pattern upon her fins. It is said that if one deliberitly damages her precious flowers, that she will viciously attack the person until they flee or are rendered incapacitated.

However, if you are quiet enough and patient enough you might get the chance to glimpse her beauty as she suns herself among the rushes of her pond.

Coloration based on this flower.

Marina

- - - - -

Marina is a Kelpi of legends. Sailors gather round at the docks, some tell stories of her song, while others claim to have actually laid eyes on her. Her song is well known among the sea folk, they say if you hear it with your own ears, the seas will be calm and bountiful for you till dawn. She is looked upon as a blessing and a guardian.

"The waves, the waves, old and new, calm yourselves and listen to my tune. Let my voice relax your souls, hush now hush, be smooth and still. Let rest the beautiful reflection of the sky, as blue as you, and as magical too. Together may you roll with ease, only to be disturbed by a soft and gentle breeze."

The villagers gather around at night, dancing together, and singing her song. Over and over until dawn comes, hoping that by singing in her name she will bless the sailors daily journey onto the seas. Unknown to them she listens from the waters, a smile on her face. She loves the people of the village very much and only wants to keep them safe. So each morning she rises to sing her song, over and over, a true guardian.

Sea Star

Some time ago, deep in the oceans, a young, female Kelpari was born. This Kelpari was born the purest black anyone had ever seen from the tip of her muzzle to the tip of her tail. Even her eyes were black voids. Her parents called her Black Pearl. Many of the Kelpari were unnerved by this strange little Kelpari and as she grew up, she found herself alone. Most Kelpari, save for her parents, were afraid of her. Those who weren't afraid were mean and cruel to the shy Kelpari. Many of them called her Black Heart or Black Void. Some called her bad luck, others claimed she was born to be evil, her coloring being clear proof of this... and some, simply called her ugly and unwanted... telling her she should just get lost and never return... ever.

Black Pearl was sad and depressed, wondering why no one wanted to play with her. Her parents told her that it was because they couldn't see how special she was and that she was destined for something more and one day, she'd find that something more as long as she believed in herself. Black Pearl tried to be strong and tried not to let it bother her but it was hard. Kelpari avoided her and some even swam away when she came near. Others ignored her completely. The worst, of course, were the ones who taunted and tormented her. One day she just couldn't take it anymore after a group of male Kelpari made a squid squirt in her face then laughed that it didn't even show and no one would even know she had ink on her.

Upset and desperate to get away, Black Pearl fled to the ocean's surface and began to cry. It was night out and the stars and moon were sparkling in the sky above. Seeing her sadness as well as the goodness in her heart, the moon and stars felt for the young Kelpari and came down to greet her and cheer her up. They surrounded the small Kelpari, stars glittering about her and the moon's glow flowing over her dark mane. She looked up into the moon and her black eyes glittered, the moon glowing in their depths until her eyes had become as pale blue as the moon, her hair catching the moon's glow as well. Many stars then began to form around her, sticking to her and becoming a part of her so that they could remain with her and she would never be alone again. When she returned home, the Kelpari were shocked and fascinated, and embarrassed, apologizing as they could now see what her parents and the moon and stars could already see. They could see just how special and kind that Black Pearl was. She soon had many friends and she became known, by all, as "Sea Star".

Prauvok The Plaguebringer

Apologies for the cruddy lore, these are obviously not my strong suit.

Ask around and only the eldest Sylestians could tell you the story of Pauvok the Plaguebringer, a fearsome Kelpari that surely would warrant a shiver to course down one's spine after they heard his tale. The land of Sylestia we have come to know and love was not always as beautiful and flourished as it is now. Long ago when Sylestia was first discovered a war was raged between three deity Kelpari brothers, each determined more than the last that all of Sylestia rightfully was theirs. For years the siblings bickered and pitted against each other over whom the land belonged to, destruction and chaos left in the wake of their epic battles. Mighty typhoons from one brother sent multi story high waves crashing along the shores to douse the embers of flame infused tornadoes from another brother, lightning created by the third brother striking fiercely at his siblings.

During the sixth year of fighting the all mother whom had witnessed the ridiculous fighting of her children had finally decided enough was enough, using her powers to birth a fourth sibling. One that was more powerful than the three combined and whose sole purpose was to end the pointless fighting of the siblings and rule Sylestia. Hence Pauvok The Plaguebringer was born, his scales rancid and decaying between spikes that jutted from his sides with each fluid motion of his streamline body, a gaze void of emotion. Jealous that the all mother had deemed them unfit to rule the land they wanted so badly the trio combined forces in an attempt to thwart the all mother's plans, but to no avail. In the end Pauvok had risen victorious in defeating his siblings just as the all mother had predicted. Wounded and bruised prides in toe, the three departed from Sylestia with the promise never to return.

To this day Pauvok still lurks within the deepest, darkest, most rancid depths of Astryl's Tranquility in a cove hidden from view to protect the land should the brothers return, or senseless fighting ensue. Even the faintest hint of an argument warrants the tranquil water to turn stale and give off the most putrid of smells as it bubbles away. It is due to this that the inhabitants of Sylestia today live such peaceful lives.
