Can't you just follow the rules without making a fuss? The male and female samples are different designs which are intended to blend seamlessly in the young.

Maybe, if your design wins, you can ask for two of the same gender, instead of a breedable pair. To have a chance of winning though, you have to actually follow the set rules and enter a male and female pair.

Sticking to my guns from a previous year, I love this pair in Skyrim and being in Markarth it only makes sense that they're diggers like Bulboirs.
