Scavenger List

[ ] 1. Find some weeds

[ ] 2. Find a rock with moss on it--Should have taken this earlier in the spring. It is looking a bit dried out now. This is near my front door.

[ ] 3. Find a fruit tree--the apple tree in my back yard.

[ ] 4. Find wild growing berries--this holly bush in the front yard (yes, that's my mailbox) is, for some strange reason, still growing berries in spring!

[ ] 5. Find shed animal hair/fur--this was caught on a thistle after I played Frisbee with the dogs. I'm pretty sure it's Yogi's fur; he's shedding his underfur in clumps, while Winter sheds individual hairs.

[ ] 6. Find a flock of birds--this is my neighbor's flock of future laying hens. I had to put my camera inside their hutch to get a decent image.

[ ] 7. Find some litter and clean it up--found this in a parking lot.

Took it into my place of work and threw it in the trashcan.

[ ] 8. Find insect/spider eggs--According to several websites about caring for fruit trees, these are most likely the eggs of the coddling moth.

[ ] 9. Find a sunset--Even got a nice, rare little streak of green light.

[ ] 10. Find a sunrise--I object to being awake at dawn. I was half-sleepwalking, but did my best under the circumstances. Luckily this is a nice neighborhood, and wandering outside in one's bathrobe to take a photo while vaguely facing east does not result in the police being called.

[ ] 11. Find a flowering bush--one of the many lilac bushes that are everywhere.

[ ] 12. Find a flowering tree--the pink dogwood tree in my front yard.

[ ] 13. Find something with a shell--found this at the base of the pear tree. It looked like a squirrel had been digging around, trying to bury that little green pear, and dug up one of last year's acorns. An acorn has a shell.

[ ] 14. Find a baby mammal--this puppy, named Koda, was sitting outside with her humans, who were collecting signatures for a ballot initiative. With her humans' permission, I took her photo (right before she started chewing up my name-and-date paper!).

[ ] 15. Find a bird that is red--again, help from my neighbor Dale. This is one of his Rhode Island Red chicks. She is just starting to come into her red color.

[ ] 16. Find a yellow insect--I kept trying to photograph butterflies and bees, then found this yellow-variety ladybug struggling in a bucket of water. I rescued it and took its photo while it dried off on my finger.

[ ] 17. Find a fossil--I totally failed at this, then my neighbor came to my rescue again and brought this pebble he had collected outside onto his deck. It is an aggregate fossil, comprised of compressed fossilized shells. Evidently I may have been walking past fossils without realizing it; I never thought to look at water-smoothed pebbles. You have to look really closely, but if you do, you can see the tiny shells that make up the stone.

[ ] 18. Find something thorny--thorny blackberry canes, not blooming yet.

[ ] 19. Find something goopy--this is the mud, stagnant water, and algae inside the old concrete tank at Silver Springs Park, Tukwila, WA. Yogi tested it for me, and yes, it is goopy.

[ ] 20. Find something right outside your house that you find beautiful--a friend gave these to me. I planted them in the front yard, so I can see them from my office window.

It's a baby mammal, not just a baby animal. Just telling you so you have time to fix it!
