What are your thoughts on magic systems? Do you tend to make/prefer systems with more specific details/mechanics (I believe they're called hard systems) or more freeform (soft) systems?
I honestly can't decide xD Building extremely detailed hard magic systems is really fun, though I sometimes feel like I don't have the brainpower to keep it up without leaving obvious gaps and that it has the possibility of being restricted. Really soft magic systems, on the other hand, are also really fun because you get to chuck a ton of different things in without having to explain too much, though I've seen them get really chaotic/confusing.
Then there are probably combos of both (at least that's how I divide it up in my head), like a soft system that still seems to have some underlying structure (e.g. only mages can do magic-y things, and it runs in the family). Or maybe it has some specific mechanics, but some random god decided the rules and nobody knows where they came from, lol (totally not speaking from personal experience here, nope)
Maybe I'll talk about universe origin stories another day xD
Personally, I don't like to make magic as an outside force so much as, like, an extension of the natural world or something? Imo, I sometimes feel that when it's categorized as some completely outside random force that can only be harnessed by certain people, it feels kind of... awkwardly placed? Take element systems, for example-- not that I automatically don't like stuff that involves them, but sometimes they'll be so detailed and yet I'll think it's kind of strange to divide the universe into elements that neatly. (Imagine an element magic system except it's the periodic table lmao, I feel like I've seen a writing prompt of that) Anyways yeah, I usually do mine as, like, weirdly scientific (in that world, at least, what's science, i don't know), or at least something that exists naturally (e.g. all life has some kind of whatever the "magic" is, or if it's a soft system then it's some random thing that happens all the time, like, I dunno, plants suddenly deciding to become murderous is normal). That might be flawed logic, though lol
