The Joy of Designing: Round One - Designs
Extended to the 18th

This a closed contest to those who made it through the application process. A big congratulations to all the applicants that made it into the competition! I can't wait to see what exciting things you come up with. (: There are just a few more feedback mails I am getting to - so if you haven't heard back from me, you should receive your mail by tomorrow. There is a reiteration of some of the general information below as well as submission details for post application rounds. It's then followed by the theme for this round.

General Contest Information

The first round will kick off today (3/4). You will have until next Sunday (3/11) at 11:59pm to submit designs for the round once it is posted. The week after will be just for voting. But! I will release the prompt or theme for the next round at the start of the voting thread so you have around two weeks to work on your designs. It will alternate design/voting/design/voting... However, this means there is potential for you to work on these designs early, but be eliminated via the voting round.

Voting - please do not reveal your designs to anyone until voting is over! Revealing your designs or getting your friends to vote for your design set will result in an automatic elimination. This means don't submit these designs in other contest and please don't submit them publicly on the generator! Everyone will receive 3 votes. You may vote for three different designs/design sets. You may not put all three votes on one set, but you may elect to vote for less than 3. All applicants are allowed to vote, but! You may not vote for your own design. I will know who's design belongs to who - so no sneaky stuff. :P YOU MAY NOT CHANGE YOUR VOTE IF YOU'VE ALREADY VOTED - there will be no edits allowed. Please let me know if you'd like to be pinged for the voting threads!

Workshops - I will be hosting a workshop during each voting week. These workshops are designed to help you learn some fun tips and tricks about designing as well as give back to the community some as well. People in the contest and out of the contest are welcome to participate in these workshops! Those from our contest who participate will be awarded an extra vote for the next round. I will specify which round it applies to in the workshop description to eliminate confusion. The first workshop will be available starting on 3/11.

Questions - If you have any questions please send me a private message and do not post them in this thread. Please put The Joy of Designing: Round One - Questions in the subject line. This is because I don't want any questions relevant to the designs created to affect the blind vote.

Round Themes - I will detail around 3 designs that fall into a theme for each week. It will be less writing intensive than the application though - perhaps a couple sentences here and there.

Submission Information

Official Submissions - Upon completing your designs, I ask you DO NOT save them to the generator publicly! This is very important as it ruins the blind vote. Send them to me via a PM with the subject line The Joy of Designing: Round One - Designs. Please submit the image links with a size of 250. Please don't submit them to your moderator as the moderators were only being used in the application process.

Late Submissions - I understand life happens and things get in the way! What I have decided to do is allow submissions past the deadline through the voting week, but! The voting thread will be up within 24 hours of the submission deadline. If you submit past that time, you risk losing out on votes because the voting thread will still be going up on time. I.E. If you submit late - the voting still goes up, but your submissions will be added to it later. Thus, some people may have already voted.

Early submissions - meaning you submit up to 24 hours before the deadline - I will happily give you feedback on and allow you a resubmission as long as it is still in before the deadline. You may not ask for advice and then submit the revised designs past the deadline. Your original set will be used.

Round One Theme - Mythology

Please use different mythologies for each design set - if you use two mythologies in design set 1, please don't use either of those mythologies again. Please include any references used in the creation of your design.

Design Set 1 - For this design set, I ask you create a design pair based on god(s)/titan(s) in mythology - however these gods must be related in some way if you choose to represent more than one god in the pair. This is a fairly wide open category. The design for each may be totally different. You may use any species. You may use two different species for the pair. You may select any genders for the pair: two males, two females, or one of each. You may even choose two gods from different mythologies if you can tie them together. For example, you may choose the god of the dead from Japanese mythology and the god of the dead from Greek mythology for your pair. You may choose to do two gods who conflict, romantic interests, family, or are great friends. You may rather create a pair that represents one god. Please write a small description - one or two sentences - for your pair that includes the god, mythology, and the relationship if you choose to represent more than one god in your pair.

Design Set 2 - For this design set, please select a creature from mythology to be made into a pair. Include a male and female of the same species that show the same traits and palette. Please include the name of creature, the mythology it originates from, and how it is featured in the mythology.

Design Set 3 - For this design set, select a mythology you know little about and choose a god you find interesting or inspires you. Create a design pair (one male and one female) based off this god and include a small description about the god that includes what mythology, god, and why you selected this god. Please use the same traits, species, and palette. It is very likely there will be some research involved in this design!

I can't wait to see what you all come up with!

I have edited Design Set 1 to now include the ability to use titans in mythology in the design set. (:

Here are some resources that might be helpful for this round:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mythologies
This includes a list of different mythologies that might help in Design Set 3.

The card art for this game depicts a number of gods as well as some mythological creatures which you might find helpful when designing. (:

I have gotten a number of mails requesting an extension for this round - while I won't ordinarily extend it, I recognize this round only had one week of design time and as a result, I will postpone voting until next week and the due date until the 18th. However, there will not be an extension for any other rounds since they will be two weeks long by default! I am happy to send feedback mails, but only a couple of mails have requested it thus far so please put in your mail if you'd like some - I still have two to get back to. (:

Absolutely loving the designs that have come in so far and can't wait to see the rest!

And my apologies if you post questions on this thread - I get a lot of notifications and ask that you send mails so I don't miss them! Nothing personal. (:
