it's kind of a vague question so i'll try to cover as mutch as possible on that topic, tell me if i missed somthing or if you want me to go more in depth about somthing. ^-^'
A pet will normaly take about 28 days between the moment it's egg will be breed/generated and the moment when it will turn adult (648 hours).
A generated pet will nead a waiting time of 18 days, this include not only essences pets but also your starter.
Wild pets/eggs get generated with a rendom amount of maturity point witch mean that yes, the pet you catch may still be adolescent tho you will never encounter hatchies in the wild oustide of rendom events (or if you deside to slap an amulet on one of your battle pets).
Testing a pet will allow you to see how mutch maturity points your pet have, if you dont have a test kit some players offer this service for free.
Nurrituring eggs and hatchies can give them points (each 4 nurriture for egg and 6 for hatchy that pet gain 1 point) each point is an hour less to wait so a significant amount of nurriture can shave a few days or even a weak in the right case.
While you cannot nurriture adolescents there is an item, the magical pie, that can be used to add 144 points (6 days) to a pet's growth, tho you can only use one at the time and have to wait for a while before you are allowed to use another one on the same pet.
No, your pet will not die of old age or lose it's hability to breed once it turn adult nothing else will happent to it age whise. (technicaly you can disable breeding on a pet but it require an item to do so)
