The purpose of this guide is to show you how much ability expertise (proficiency with specific spells) you gain whilst in the Lost Grove.
First and foremost, each pet has up to 4 abilities (5 once level 75, but that's not reachable at this point).
Each of those has up to 4 "gains" in stars (up to 5 star), but are limited to 3 gains (4 stars achieved) at this time.
This affects both the effectiveness of the ability (in various ways), and how fast you gain expertise.
Rate of Gain:
From what I can tell, there are exactly two ways an ability gains expertise. (Both only work in Lost Grove)
- each time an ability is used
This could be less than .01%, and seems to be based on the level of the ability and which ability used, but does not seem to be based on the enemy.
- Every time an enemy is defeated
based on how difficult the enemy is, all abilities the pet has the capability of using (so not ability 5, at this time), will gain an amount of Expertise. It seems that this amount is a "Flat Amount" (based on level of enemy and level of ability, but not slot).

The Maws of Madness Update:
With the update of adding the Maws of Madness, which added tower floors that gave a certain amount of displayed Ability Expertise, we can compare notes.
Usage Score:
Ability 1: 10% of a point
Ability 2: 50% of a point
Ability 3: 30% of a point
Ability 4: 2 points
Ability 5: 5 points
Kill Score
2 Star Enemies: 50% of a point 60% with Artifact
3 Star Enemies: 2 points 2.4 with Artifact
4 Star Enemies: 5 points 6 with Artifact
5 Star Enemies: 30 points 36 with Artifact
At some point, numbers above were changed. They used to be 1/2/5/20
Artifact in question is "Artifact - Grand Protector's Insignia" rewarded from Patriotic Event 2021
Previous Information:
Assumptions:
1: Enemies with the same star amount give the same amount of kill-points. (all 4 stars give same as any other 4 star)
2: Behemoth Does not affect any of the below data.
3: Element of Pet does not affect any of below data.
I make these assumptions based on the data I have seen. But the odds of me not having noticed something are still not zero. If these is untrue, I wish to know.
Use Data
Ranges provided are to show you the margin of error associated with the data collected. Presumptions are based upon numbers that make sense, but are not guaranteed.
Ability 1
Target: 2 stars. "Points" necessary: 18750 - 20000 Probably 20k, which means 2 hits = .01%
Target: 3 stars. "Points" necessary: 37124 - 43333 Probably 40k, which means 4 hits = .01%
Target: 4 stars. "Points" necessary: 76800 - 83478 Probably 80k, which means 8 hits = .01%
Ability 2
Target: 2 stars. "Points" necessary: 3750 - 4000. Probably 4k, which means 1 hit = .025%
Target: 3 stars. "Points" necessary: 7142 - 8571. Probably 8k, which means 1 hit = .0125%
Target: 4 stars. "Points" necessary: 10322 - 21333. Probably 16k, which means 1 hit = .00625% (Thanks to Kaita)
Ability 3
Target: 2 stars. "Points" necessary: 6721 - 6949. 1 hit = .01439% - .014878%
Target: 3 stars. "Points" necessary: 11428 - 14166. 13.3k would mean 1 hit = .0075%
Target: 4 stars. "Points" necessary: 16000 - 26666. (Thanks to Painteventer & Kaita)
Ability 4
Target: 2 stars. "Points" necessary: 952 - 1052. Probably 1k. Which means 1 hit = .10%
Target: 3 stars. "Points" necessary: 1666 - 2500. Probably 2k. Which means 1 hit = .05% (Thanks to 18eities)
Target: 4 stars. "Points" necessary: 2666- 5714. Probably 4k. Which means 1 hit = .025% (Thanks to Kaita)
Kill Data
Affects all abilities based on how many stars are possessed already. Note, these are actually estimations, but since they are larger and harder to encounter "more than a few enemies", we have to live with it.
2 Star Enemies: .05% / .025% / .0125%
3 Star Enemies: .10% / .05% / .025% (S2: Thanks to 18eities (and myself, though 18 was first), S3:presumed)
4 Star Enemies: .25% / .125% / .06125% (S3: Thanks to Kaita)
5 Star Enemies: 1.00% / .50% / .25% (S3: Thanks to 18eities)
Passive: Each Crit gives 1 stack of Raith's Focus for 2 turns, stacking to 2, refreshing duration. All stacks lost if expires.
Raith's Focus: +2% Physical Damage & +1% Critical Chance per stack
Thorncoat: CD:3 Cost:50 Buff:Thorncoat for 3 turns: +15% Physical and Magical Mitigation. 100% Physical Damage to attackers. Immune to Crits and some special effects.
R2: 350% absorb
R3: CD 9 turns
R4: Valor and Taunted last 6 turns
R5: 500% absorb. Taunt decreases Physical/Magical damage by 15%.
Faerina's Bulwark: CD:120. Duration:9
+30% Mitigation, Immune to Crits/spcial, If rendered unconcious, expires and restores 10% HP. Absorb for 40% of max HP at end of duration.
Fireball: Deals 100% magic damage. Hits: 2. 50% on Crit, Burning for 3 turns. Mana: +10. Burning: 100%/turn.
R2: Base damage is now 200%
R3: Mana gain now 15.
R4: Debuff 100% on crit.
R5: Mana gain now 20.
Explosive Fireball: CD:2. Cost:50. Deals: 200%. Hits:all. Debuff:Combusting (3 turns). Combusting: 25%/turn. Doubles each turn. At end, explodes for 200% to all enemies.
R2: Base damage now 275%
R3: Costs 40 mana
R4: Base damage now 350%
R5: Combust 50%/turn and 400% explode.
R2: Debuff lasts 6 turns.
R3: Debuff deals 450%/turn
R4: CD now 6 turns.
R5: Debuff deals 600%/turn
Ability 5's Added Sept 26, 2021, obtainable October 9th.
Wrath of Malgorus: CD:120. Deals 1000%. Hits All Enemies. Enemies defeated by this direct damage reduce its cooldown by 10 turns. Consumes Malgorus' Familiar - regained after 20 turns.
Debuff: Malgorus' Wrath (10 Turns): 200% Magic Damage per turn. 500% Magic Damage at end of duration.
Malgorus' Familiar Passive: Deals 60% Magic Damage per turn, +10% every 5 turns it is active (max 120%) against same target as this pet. Unaffected by general buffs/debuffs.
R2: Familiar does 70% damage. Max 140% extra.
R3: Familiar does 80% damage. Max 160% extra.
R4: Familiar does 90% damage. Max 180% extra.
R5: Familiar does 100% damage. Max 200% extra.
old Wrath of Malgorus: CD:100 Cost:200. Deals 900%. Hits:all. Debuff: Malgorus' Wrath (5 turns): -20% Magical Mitigation. 100%/turn, 500% at end of duration.
R2: Base damage now 1200%
R3: Base damage now 1500%
R4: Debuff now -30% Mitigation
R5: Debuff lasts 10 turns. (Note: not a direct improvement)

Bolt: Deals: 150%. Hits: 1. Mana: +10. 50% chance to gain Buff: Frost (3 Turns): Absorb 50% (Absorption is 50% of physical damage attribute, absorbs both kinds of damage)
R2: Base damage now 200%
R3: Absorb now 100%
R4: Mana gain now 15.
R5: 100% chance to buff.
Ice Barrier: CD:2. Cost:50. Hits: 1 (Friendly). Buff: Ice Barrier (3 turns): Absorb 200%, restore HP 50% of absorbed damage. Immune to Crits and some special attacks.
R2: Cost: 40
R3: Duration: 5 turns
R4: Absorbs 300%
R5: Restored HP 100% of absorbed.
R2: Base damage now 250%
R3: Buff: Quickness now 30%
R4: Buff: Damage now 20%
R5: Buff Duration now 6 turns.
Ice Sphere: CD:10. Cost:100. Hits: All (Friendly). Buff: Ice Sphere (4 turns): 400% absorb, 50% HP Restore/absorb. Immune to Crits and some special attacks. Shared among all affected targets.
Divine Balance: CD:15. Cost: 100. Hits: All (Friendly). Buff: Divine Balance (3 turns): If rendered unconcious or expires, then redistribute HP and restores 150% hp.
R2: Cost: 80
R3: Buff heals 200% at use/expiration
R4: CD: 12
R5: Buff heals 300% at use/expiration
Vaeluna's Grace: CD:120. Hits all allies. Grants 4 stacks of buff.
Buff: Vaeluna's Grace: Upon taking direct damage, consume 1 stack and restore health equal to 200% Magic Damage.
R2: Cooldown: 110. 5 Stacks of Vaeluna's Grace.
R3: Cooldown: 100. 6 Stacks of Vaeluna's Grace.
R4: Cooldown: 90. 7 Stacks of Vaeluna's Grace.
R5: Cooldown: 80. 8 Stacks of Vaeluna's Grace.
If you manage to not expend stacks of Vaeluna's Grace before using the ability again, this ability will reset the charges up to the full amount - essentially wasting any leftovers.
Passive: Beam and Fairy Light have a 3% chance to grant Buff: Vaeluna's Protection (2 Turns) to the party pet with the lowest health. (Absorbs 100% Magic Damage)
R2: Absorbs 150%. 6% chance to buff.
R3: Absorbs 200%. 9% chance to buff. Duration: 3 turns
R4: Absorbs 250%. 12% chance to buff.
R5: Absorbs 300%. 15% chance to buff. Duration: 4 turns
old Vaeluna's Grace: CD:100. Cost: 200. Hits: All (Friendly). Heal: 500%. Buff: Vaeluna's Grace (10 turns): +20% Avoidance. Heals 100%/turn.
(Leech Synergy does not affect itself)
R2: Debuff: 20% drain. 25% damage/turn. 100% leech.
R3: Cost: 60
R4: Buff: now 100% Bonus to Leech effects.
R5: Buff Duration: 6. Debuff Duration: 9.
Sept 26, 2021 Changes:
R4: Buff now 100% leech (up from 75%)
Saphryn's Vengeance: Cooldown: 120. Grants Buff: Incorporeal (4 Turns): 50% of damage received is staggered delayed, evenly over the next 3 turns. Readjusts every time damage is received.
Passive: Each attack avoided by this pet grants Buff: Vengeance (2 turns). Stacks up to 2 times. Each attack avoided refreshes the duration. All stacks lost if expires.
Buff: Vengeance: +2% Damage, +1% Crit, per stack.
R2: +4% Damage, +1% Crit, per stack.
R3: +6% Damage, +2% Crit, per stack. Vengance lasts 3 turns and stacks up to 3 times.
R4: +8% Damage, +2% Crit, per stack. Stacks up to 4 times.
R5: +10% Damage, +3% Crit, per stack. Vengance lasts 4 turns and stacks up to 5 times.
Pre-Patriotic Event 2021: Kill Score changed from 1/2/5/20 to .5/2/5/30, no idea when this actually was changed as this page was up for 2 years and its difficult to confirm data. Krinadon claims no memory of this change - which means either that I am wrong or Krinadon forgot.
Sept 26, 2021 Changes:
AIR3: Torrential Blow:
R1: +15% crit/quick (down from 20%)
R3: +25% crit/quick (down from 40%)
Earth3: Thorncoat
R1: 15% mitigation (down from 20%)
R4: 25% mitigation (down from 30%)
Earth4: Mocking Blow
R5: Taunts for 5 turns (Was Taunt also decreases Physical and Magical damage by 15%)
Light1: Beam
R5: Heal 75% of damage dealt. (down from 100%)
Light2: Fairy Light
R5: Deals 300% (down from 350%)
Shadow2: Vampiric Strike
R2: Damage: 300% (down from 350%)
Shadow4: Siphon
R4: Buff now 100% leech (up from 75%)
