Someone at one point investigated how color inheritance works. I think it was something like, the offspring's colors will fall randomly between the numerical values of the parents' colors. So the closer the parents' colors (as in themed projects, personal breeding projects, etc.), the more consistent the offspring's colors will be. The more different the colors, the greater chance of weird and washed-out colors, which then get passed down from there. Again, this happens for every species due to random breeding.

That they are ;). Its why theyre my favorite :). It was actually that set of traits (Moon Armor) that made me like them, despite how odd they look (The female in particular.).

(You'll note that earlier revamps happened a lot faster, but this was a combination of reasons- they gathered less feedback from the players (many they only announced when the new base art was complete and it was jsut the traits left to be done), there were fewer traits for a lot of them (this is why they don't have fae/nyte/bulb in the trait design contests- to reduce the work when their new art is getting done), regen didn't exist and didn't need to be accounted for etc.)
